CHAMPIONS CROWNED AT THE RIP CURL GROMSEARCH PRES. BY FLIGHT CENTRE NATIONAL FINAL.

NORTH NARRABEEN, SYDNEY
Wednesday, 18 January 2017: from Surfing NSW
The Rip Curl GromSearch presented by Flight Centre National Final saw all champions crowned today in stiflingly hot weather at North Narrabeen Beach.

Jay Brown (Cronulla, NSW) put on a highlight reel worthy performance in the 16-and-Under Boys, posting a near perfect 9.33 scoring wave (out of a possible ten points) to gain the upper hand against fellow event standout Noah Stocca (Peregian Beach, Qld) who put up a valiant fight, posting a 12.67 heat total (out of a possible 20 points), but was unable to notch up the 8.84 wave required to take the top spot. As a result, Brown has earned a spot in the International Final, which will take place later in the year.

Joining Brown at the upcoming Rip Curl GromSearch International Final will be Sunshine Coast surfer Sasha Baker (Mudjimba, Qld) who took out an in-form Piper Harrison (Coolangatta, Qld) in the 16-and-Under Girls final. Baker used her deadly frontside snaps to muster up a 13.40 heat total and take the final ahead of the fellow Queenslander.

George Pittar (Manly, NSW) bagged a title for the Northern Beaches, taking out the 14-and-Under Boys ahead of local surfer Jamie Thomson (Narrabeen, NSW) who was the standout surfer all event. Pittar put on a healthy display of stylish turns to get the edge over Thomson who got within a point of taking the title.

Lennox Head duo Nyxie Ryan (Lennox Head, NSW) and Jai Glinderman (Lennox Head, NSW) both bagged titles for the north coast taking out the 14-and-Under Girls and 12-and-Under Boys respectively. Ryan posted a 15.50 heat total to claim the win ahead of Carly Shanahan (Wooli, NSW), while Glinderman got the nod over fellow Lennox Head standout Jack O’Brien (Lennox Head, NSW). As a former Narrabeen resident, Glinderman had the local crowd on their feet when he claimed the top spot on the dais.

Cedar Leigh-Jones (Whale Beach, NSW) ensured another title remained another trophy stayed on the Northern Beaches, taking out the 12-and-Under Girls. Leigh-Jones dominated the field in the windswept conditions posting a mammoth 15.33 heat total to add another title to her overflowing trophy cabinet.

DAY OF MASSIVE UPSETS AT RIP CURL GROMSEARCH PRES. BY

FLIGHT CENTRE AT NARRABEEN

NORTH NARRABEEN, SYDNEY
Tuesday, 17 January 2017: from Surfing NSW
The Rip Curl GromSearch presented by Flight Centre National Final saw a day of tricky conditions and massive upsets as competitors fought to cement a position into tomorrow’s final rounds.

Local event wildcard Sophia Chapman (Narrabeen, NSW) caused one of the biggest upsets of the event, eliminating top seed Kirra-Belle Olsson (Avoca, NSW) in the 16-and-Under quarterfinals. Chapman used her local knowledge to muster up a respectable 13.33 heat total (out of a possible 20 points) and eliminate the former event runner-up from the competition. Chapman will face Sasha Baker (Mudjimba, Qld) in tomorrow’s semi-final after Baker eliminated local ripper Tru Starling (Narrabeen, NSW) in the second quarterfinal.

Fellow Northern Beaches local Bodhi Leigh-Jones (Whale Beach, NSW) was also eliminated in the quarterfinals by Piper Harrison (Coolangatta, Qld) after Leigh-Jones was unable to find a near-perfect 9.44 scoring wave to better Harrison’s impressive 13.93 heat total.

Hot off a recent victory in the 2016 Surf, Dive ‘N’ Ski Australian Junior Titles at Phillip Island, Xavier Huxtable (Jan Juc, Vic) was unable to find the same form and fell victim to the deadly forehand attack of Noah Stocca (Peregian Beach, Qld). Huxtable retained priority for nearly 60 percent of the heat, but was unable to find more than one scoring wave and as a result was knocked out of the competition by Stocca who posted a decent 12.50 heat score.

While Xavier experienced the lows of competitive surfing, brother Ethan Huxtable walked away from day two of competition on a high after dominating the second round of the 12-and-Under Boys. Ethan remained busy over the duration of the heat catching multiple waves and notching up a 14.60 heat total.

The Rip Curl GromSearch presented by Flight Centre will commence each day at 7:30 am with the call for the day's schedule and location confirmed via the event hotline at 6:45 am. The event hotline number is 0458 247 212 which will leave a voice recorded message each morning of the event.

RIP CURL GROMSEARCH PRES. BY FLIGHT CENTRE

GETS OFF TO A FLYING START AT NARRABEEN

NORTH NARRABEEN, SYDNEY
Monday, 16 January 2017: from Surfing NSW
Some of Australia’s most promising young surfers returned to North Narrabeen Beach today for the Rip Curl GromSearch presented by Flight Centre National Final.

In the playful three-foot conditions, local Northern Beaches surfer Jamie Thomson (Narrabeen, NSW) put on the most dominant display of surfing seen all day, posting a huge 17.67 heat total (out of a possible 20 points) in the 14-and-Under Boys. Thomson executed a barrage of mammoth backside snaps to post the aforementioned total and earn his spot straight into the quarterfinals.

Central Coast surfer Lennox Chell (Avoca, NSW) showed he was also a threat in the same 14 Boys division performing an innovative array of frontside turns to post a 17.10 heat total.

Fresh off a win at the recent Surfarama contest on the NSW Central Coast, Northern Beaches native Cedar Leigh-Jones (Avalon, NSW), continued her winning streak posting a near-perfect 9.33 scoring ride in her opening 12 Girls heat. Leigh-Jones surfed well beyond her years and sent a warning shot to all her competitors when she unloaded on a playful righthander and notched up the previously mentioned score.

Ellie Harrison (Barwon Heads, Vic) also joined Leigh-Jones in the winner's circle claiming her first round exchange in the opening round of the 12 Girls.

Xavier Huxtable (Jan Juc, Vic) was the best interstate performer on day one of the event, earning himself a 17.27 heat total in the 16-and-Under Boys, which left his fellow competitors chasing a combination of scores to snatch his lead. Despite not being local, Huxtable showed incredible knowledge of the Narrabeen bank, executing a handful of powerful backside manoeuvres to lock in the score.

Local surfers Sophia Chapman (Narrabeen, NSW) and Tru Starling (Narrabeen, NSW) flew the flag high and proud for the spectators on the beach, both claiming their opening 16 Girls exchanges. Chapman and Starling will be joined in the quarterfinals by Kiara Meredith (Barrack Heights) and Piper Harrison (Coolangatta, Qld) who both claimed their respective first round heats in the same division.
