First Celebratory Events revealed
Avalon Beach Surf Lifesaving Club turns 100 in 2025!
Events and activities will take place throughout the year to celebrate the Club's Volunteer Surf Lifesavers keeping Avalon Beach safe for residents and visitors for 100 years.
The year will recognise many outstanding achievements including the Club's role in developing surf rescue equipment - Avalon Beach SLSC is the Home of the IRB - keeping people safe through preventative measures by patrols, rescues, training and educating the community about surf safety, including local schools - our Beach being a relatively dangerous beach - building younger members into valued Australians through surf lifesaving training and surf sports development - the Club has many State, National and International Champions to be proud of. The Club won the Inaugural Most Outstanding Club Award on the Northern Beaches, as well as National SLSA Club of the Year, amongst other awards.
The Club has hosted many community and sporting events over the years, as diverse as running the annual Christmas carols for many years, and hosting the National IRB Championships.
The range of centenary celebrations is aimed at past and present surf club members, the Avalon Beach community, and visitors to our area.
The surf club is a focal point for the Avalon Beach community, so it is fitting that the community should be part of and take pride in this milestone.

Sunday 19 January 2025: Commemorative Video
It will be the 20 Year Anniversary of the Club's Pittwater "Community Event of the Year" for Tsunami victims.
A video, compiled by Life Member Warren Young OAM, will run on a loop from from 4pm onwards Sunday 19 January in the Bangalley Bar to commemorate this important event for Club members and the general public.
In 2005, the Surf Club invited the community, visitors, swim participants and club members to join together to express their condolences and raise funds for the Tsunamis appeal.
A line of people stretched along the entire beach, together with a circle of boardriders on the ocean. The day raised over $4000 for tsunami victims.
February Festival 100 Years of Avalon Beach SLSC
A series of film evenings, cocktails and canapes, tunes and tequila, afternoons and evenings will be held at the Surf Club. Open to the public. Starting from 1 February 2025.
1 February 2025: Highway One
The year is 1975 when 25yr old surfer and film maker Steven Otton embarked upon making his film 'Highway One'. The story is centred around a group of surfers and their girlfriends who travel 'up the coast' via the Pacific Highway (Highway One) showing the seminal surf film 'Morning of the Earth' in regional and town theatres. A visual feast and a true capture of places and times gone by showing our beloved Avalon along with Manly and areas of the northern Rivers up to Byron Bay.
The soundtrack of surfing and the lifestyle includes 'Capricorn Dancer' by Richard Clapton as well as songs from Skyhooks and local 70's band The Bilgola Bop Band.
February 1, 2025 is 50 years after Steve started making this now iconic film and will be the second only world premiere of 'Highway One' at Avalon Cinema after the original world premier there in 1977! Book fast for this nostalgic cinema event. 6pm movie followed by canapes at the Surf Club by Lovat on the Beach, compliments of McGrath.
