DIY A Summer-Autumn Salad Garden for a Balcony or at Waist-height
The Australian Bureau of Meteorology’s long-range forecast, issued 9 January 2025, states the forecast for February to April shows above average rainfall is likely for much of coastal parts of New South Wales and warmer than average days are likely across much of eastern Australia along with warmer than average nights being very likely with an increased chance of unusually high overnight temperatures across Australia.
As everyone in our household are BIG salad consumers, and ‘getting on’, this Issue we’d like to share a DIY project that will suit those who now want to garden at waist-height or have access to food they can harvest from their flat’s balcony.
All seeds, planter boxes and pots, as well as the seed-raising mix and watering can, were bought online through Johnson Brothers Mitre 10. To avoid the traffic jam that happens at this time of year, known as dodging the Bilgola Bends Barrage of cars heading north, we arranged to pick up everything needed from the Avalon Beach store.
Who wants to sit in traffic when you could be on the beach or pottering in the garden?
You can simply drive around the back of the Avalon Beach store once notified your order is in, to what's known locally as 'Johnson's Lane', and load up from there - thus avoiding that Avalon Parade in Summer trying-to-get-a-parking-spot challenge as well.
The great part about ordering what you need for your DIY project through Johnson Brothers Mire 10 is they have great friendly and trained staff who will help you load up anything that’s a little bulky. For example, these two great lads helped load up the 50 litre bulk bags of potting mix/garden soil we ordered so all we had to do was tip them out the boot when we got home. We then used a bucket and an old takeaway container as a scoop to fill up the pots.
l to r; Josh and Aaron - thank you!
these we could manage ourselves
The seeds chosen were those we use all the time – you can choose what suits what you make in the kitchen. We already have cherry tomatoes from a previous JBH seed crop, which have continued to self-seed each year, so what was needed are the lettuce leaves and herbs such as Basil and Parsley and some zing from Rocket.
The nice thing about using these pots is they are portable and when the plants grow you can also use them as a decoration to brighten up Summer and Autumn feast tables or the kitchen windowsill. This also keeps them out of reach of bush turkeys or night foraging possums.
We chose the Italian Plain Leaf Parsley version as experience has taught us possums will not eat this variety but do love the Curley Leaf Parsley – so you won’t have too much success planting that one if, like us, your garden is home to possums. Try the Italian one instead.
The lettuce varieties we went with are the ‘Salad Mix, gourmet selection, and the Baby Combo Lettuce varieties. These are ready to harvest in 8-11 weeks although if you just pick the outer leaves and let the plant stay in the ground, they will continue to produce leaves you can harvest for weeks.
Rocket needs part sun, part shade and will be ready to harvest in 7-8 weeks, the Basil also needs part sun, part shade, and will be ready to harvest in 6 weeks. As with the lettuce, if you just pick the outer leaves you will be able to harvest these two well into Indian Summer, or Autumn weather.
The Italian Parsley takes 16 weeks to reach harvest, so we’ll rely on that already growing and harvest this new crop mid-Autumn for salads and the Tabbouleh, Chimichurri and Pesto we make and eat then.
To be able to garden at waist-height, and keep an eye on them, an old table on the balcony that gets sun for half of the day was utilised.
The planter boxes were chosen for the lettuce mixes (2x planter box for the 2 x seeds making 4 boxes for lettuces) while one for the large leaf Rocket and one for the Parsley was planted out with the seeds. The four smaller pots had 2 x Sweet Basil and 2 x a mix of the Parsley and the Basil so they can be harvested from the kitchen windowsill, which gets good sun, as well as used for the centrepiece of an outdoors table as well. Imagine your guests being able to pick a leaf or two to top their salads – yum!
The lettuce planted out pots were placed where they will get full sun all day.
The high-grade potting mix formed about half of the soil put into the planter boxes prior to being topped up with the Yates seed-raising mix. We chose Yates seeds and seed-raisers, available through Johnson Brothers Mitre 10, as we’ve always had great success with their products.
The added bonus is that this is an Australian company that sources what it sells from here – so that too will add to your success rate. Yates was founded in Auckland, New Zealand by Arthur Yates in 1883. In 1887, he opened a branch in Sussex St, Sydney, and left his brother, Ernest, in charge of the New Zealand store. They came to an agreement to run the stores separately until the 1980s, when the two companies joined together again.
By 1893, Arthur started selling his seed packets for home gardeners. Yates began to sell other gardening items apart from seeds, and the range soon included fertiliser, sprays, pots, potting mix and tools. In 1895, he began writing a gardening book. This became Yates' Gardening Guide for Australia and New Zealand: Hints for Amateurs, directing its instructions to home gardeners rather than to professionals, as many previous gardening books had done. The ninety-page Guide had black and white illustrations. It became an annual publication and contained information on new seeds and varieties as well as the planning and management of gardens and care of shrubs, flowers and vegetables. Still produced more than a century later, it has been the most useful and popular of the relatively inexpensive garden books available.
Arthur Yates was also a staunch supporter of the Farm Home in Windsor and the Boys Home in Milleewa, Ashfield. He passed away on 30 July 1926 in his residence in Burwood, Sydney, aged 65. The cause of death was cancer. He was buried in Enfield Cemetery and his company remained in operation, first as a family business headed by his eldest son Harold, and later as Yates Seeds Limited. It merged with Hortico to become Arthur Yates & Co. (later Yates), which was purchased for $45 million by Orica in 2003. Yates is now a subsidiary of Dulux Group, an Australian listed company on the S&P/ASX 200.
Yates Seed Raising Mix 15L is ideal for the germination of vegetable, herb and flower seeds. This premium quality, the multipurpose seed-raising mix can be used alone or with other varieties of potting mixes to create a warm, active medium where your plants will thrive. It provides a perfect balance of moisture retention, drainage and aeration for healthy seedlings. It contains added fertiliser to boost seedling growth, giving you healthier plants that grow stronger and faster than those grown in regular soil.
We chose the BIG bag of Debco Raised Garden soil and only used half a bag- the extra bag and a half is for topping up our other potted plants at this time of year.
Founded in 1967, Debco is another revered Australian brand, synonymous with horticultural excellence. Debco has consistently served the needs of dedicated gardeners, offering a vast array of potting mixes, mulches, and gardening products. Each product is a testament to Debco's meticulous research and development, as well as rigorous testing to ensure the highest quality standards.
So, by buying local and buying Australian products from Australian producers, you are not only supporting those who do great things in your community, you will also have a high chance of a good crop for late Summer and throughout Autumn and into Winter as these are all made for Australian conditions.
All up we spent around $160.00 on the seeds, pots and soil – all of which, apart from the seeds, can be reused.
With the herbs costing between $4-6 a bunch, lettuces that won’t be as fresh or conveniently located averaging $3 to $7, and being able to harvest these each day for weeks, we’ll save money and have greens for our salads, pastas and special dishes.
Once you have finished with your Summer Salad crop you may want to consider letting the plants go to seed so that can be harvested for a new crop next Spring.

Johnson Brothers Mona Vale E-Waste Recycle Program
Johnson Brothers have become a FREE e-waste recycling collection point at our Mona Vale store.
The bins for disposal are at the start of the parking for our Trade customers, but it’s free for all to use (during business hours).
From December 4th 2023, you can drop off any unwanted electrical items at Johnson Bros Mitre 10 Mona Vale for recycling by our e-waste management partner, Sircel
E-waste is anything with an electrical plug or battery. This includes electric power tools, household appliances, computers and mobile phones.
We cannot accept gas, petrol or diesel appliances.
When you bring your stockpile of old power tools, tablets and TVs to our e-waste collection bins, what happens then?
Our recycling partner, Sircel, collects the waste each week and transports it to a facility in Western Sydney. There, Sircel deploys their world-leading and proprietary refining solution to:
- Triage all electronics that may have a future useful life, such as TVs and computers
- Securely data-erase all electronics to remove all information in preparation for reuse
- For products with no viable future use, Sircel safely removes any batteries and sends them downstream to a dedicated, authorised battery recycling partner
- All e-waste is then mechanically destroyed
- Individual commodities are recovered and returned to the circular economy for re-use as regenerated resources.
Give your old power tools, household appliances and computers a new life in the circular economy.
Plastic tool casings could become bench seats, copper cabling could become a new copper pipe, and the gold, silver and palladium in your old phone could be transformed into fuel cells in your car.
Together, we can make finite resources infinite.
