Newport Breakers Rugby Club's Fantastic 2024 Season: club champions in Division 2 - semi final berths booked after round 14

Huge shout out to Ivvy Foods for making the cake with a days notice

Newport are Division 2 Club Champions for 2024.

The boys took a few minutes post training to get together and celebrate this achievement but the job is not done yet. A huge day at Porters on Saturday August against St Patricks with multiple grades playing for minor premierships.

The Reliance Shield was presented to the club after the Saturday August 3 1st Grade match for winning Division 2.

Saturday was also Ladies Day 2024, which sold out again this year and featured scrumptious food, a great raffle with brilliant prizes, special guests and some brilliant entertainment from local musicians.

To wrap up the day players and supporters were joined by the United Notions Band in the clubhouse.

On Saturday August 3 2024 NSW Rugby stated:

''With the completion of the minor premierships in Divisions Two - Five, we acknowledge and congratulate our first Club Champions for 2024.

''Well done to Newport, winning the Reliance Shield in a season-long dominant display in Division Two.''

''Knox have pipped their strong rivals, Sydney Irish and Merrylands, in a close three-way race for the Div. Three Doc Harris Shield. And big congrats to Western Raptors for grabbing the Herlihy Shield in Div Four.''

In related news, Newport's No 8 Tim Anstey is currently Captain of a tour to South Africa.

Saturday's results mean all Breakers teams are in the semi-finals again this year.

Newport Breakers Rugby Club: Round 14 results (August 3 2024)

Barraclough Cup - 1st Grade
Newport 31 v 28 St Patrick's

Stockdale Cup - 2nd Grade
Newport 19 v 13 St Patrick's

Robertson Cup - Colts
Newport 25 v 24 St Patrick's

Blunt Cup - 3rd Grade
Newport 10 v 12 St Patrick's

Richardson Cup - 4th Grade
Newport 20 v 7 St Patrick's

This means that in the semis, to be played August 10 2024, Newport's 1st Grade team with face Briars at Rothwell Park, Newport's 2nd Grade team will play against St Patrick's again at the same venue, while the Colts will also play St Patrick's again, as will 3rd Grade and 4th Grades in the battle for the Blunt Cup and Richardson Cup respectively.

Rothwell Park is the home ground of Briars Rugby Union. Newport's 1st Grade has played Briars twice this season, Round 4 on May 4 at Porters, with a Newport 32 v 12 Briars result, and again in Round 10 on June 29 at C A Redmond Field, with a closer  Briars 34 v 39 Newport final score.

The Breakers First Grade boys will not be taking any edge of or rly on previous results so far this Season as they try to secure a Finals berth.

The same is said for all other Grades in the club - all are aiming to repeat their 2023 Season with all grades still viable cup winners as we near the pointy end of the 2024 Season.

The Finals are scheduled for August 17 at Concord oval, with the Grand Final to run the following Saturday  August 24 at the same venue.

The players and club would like to thank the loyal supporters who turn up week in and week out to Porters in appalling conditions or under brilliant winter sunshine to cheer the club on.

The Breakers field 4 Senior teams plus Colts and currently compete in the 2nd Division competition (Barraclough Cup).

Newport believes in mateship, hardwork and fun - with a strong community based ethos. The majority of our players are resident on the Northern Beaches of Sydney. The club has in excess of 250 registered players and officials, and we pride ourselves in the fact that we are one of the most successful clubs in the NSW Suburban competition - now for both Ladies and Men.

Our home ground is located at Porter Reserve, Burke Street, Newport and we offer players and supporters the benefit of our own club house with additional new Ladies Clubrooms adjacent to the ground following home games.

Suburban Rugby Cups: "What are you playing for?"

Barraclough Presented 1969. John Barraclough (Colleagues) Union Patron, John Barraclough, AM (1926 - 2005) and his father, H.H Barraclough, presented this cup to the MSDRU in 1969 for a new one team competition that arose with the rapid increase of clubs at the time. In 1971, following a restructuring of sub-district rugby competitions, the Barraclough Cup headed the new sub-district second division, and continues to this day.

Stockdale Presented 1971. Ted Stockdale (Briars) Presented to the MSDRU by Ted Stockdale, a previous Secretary of the Union, in 1971, this cup was first won by AMP.

Blunt Presented 1971. Charles Blunt (ARU President) Donated in 1971 by ARU President Charles Blunt, who was patron of the MSDRU from 1965 to 1989. The cup was first won by Manly.

Richardson Presented 1971. Eric Richardson (Newington Old Boys) Also introduced in 1971 by Eric Richardson of Newington Old Boys. Eric had a long involvement with Newington Old Boys, particularly as  a coach. At the time this cup provided an extra competition for those second division clubs with extra teams, with the remainder of teams in the comp being one team clubs. By 1981, the Richardson Cup and second division was only available to four team sub-district clubs.

Robertson Presented 1981. Brian Robertson (Hunters Hill). Named after former Suburban Chairman (1978-80), Brian Robertson, this cup was first won by Port Hacking. After not being contested between 1988-93, the Robertson Cup was revived to become the Colts trophy for second division.

Reliance Shield Presented 1983. Reliance Club.  "The Reliance Club Shield" was presented to the the SSDRU in 1983 for the Division Two Club Champions, by surviving members of the Reliance Club of Ashfield.
