March 31 - April 6, 2024: Issue 620
Northern Beaches Climate Action Network (NBCAN)
- On Facebook: www.facebook.com/groups/nbcan
- Website: nbcan.com.au
We try to coordinate and contribute to different groups active locally to forment discussion within the community about how precarious the future is for the next generations without rapid and profound change in our energy resources and emissions.
NBCAN and Group volunteers span a huge pool of talent, expertise and commitment and provide a far-reaching network of contacts directly or indirectly.
NBCAN is:
Just a network of organisations which range from climate and environmental activists and protest groups through to local political parties or campaigns, and local businesses producing goods and services that address what can and is being done.
NBCAN is not an incorporated organisation
• No Leader,
• No Board,
• No Money,
• No Members
As such NBCAN does not compete with any of the Groups within the network.
NBCAN is poly-partisan – every strand of political opinion is welcome to bring their voice and opinion to everything we try to do. We will only make sustained progress when EVERY party acknowledges the climate emergency and works together to find solutions and take action.
Youth have unique authority to speak truth to power and to their parents’ generation demanding a survivable future – youth are royalty to NBCAN – we have no other VIP’s.
NBCAN has an email list with ~800 contacts which is sparingly used for important notifications and reminders. Our Facebook Group also has around 800 members.
NBCAN Soapbox and Events
Most NBCAN Groups promote their activities through our Facebook Page which provides a dynamic news feed and one-stop-shop for climate and environmental action on the Northern Beaches and wider.
Anyone can suggest an activity or event on our Facebook page and those that support the idea become the organisers.
NBCAN only organises it’s own events where individual groups do not have the resources or expertise or may be conflicted – for example running poly-partisan events like our Local Government, State Government and Federal Government Candidate Forums.
NBCAN holds ad-hoc “Soap Box” meetings. Anyone who attends can speak on any topic (but ideally of relevance to climate or environment) but no one can speak for longer than 2 minutes. This ensures a fast-paced event that is also very entertaining – no one has time for long grand-standing speeches.
Political discourse or campaigning is legitimate contribution.
Our activities and events are unapologetically (but not deliberately) amateur and we strive to make them fun and engaging as well as informative, potent, demanding of change and educational.
The best way to connect is at our Soapbox meetings, held every 3 or 4 months. They are fun and informal and a little bit chaotic.
We get through 25 or so 2 min speeches for as long as people still have something to say. You book your spot by just writing your name on the whiteboard and the speeches go in rotation.
For example, the March 2024 NBCAN Soapbox event, heard from 25 speakers on topics such as:
- Go Solar Mackellar; Encouraging transition to renewables since 2022 and supporting people to get panels on roofs, batteries in houses
- Move Beyond Coal; on 116 Coal & Gas projects in the offing and Protests and days of action from 29 April
- The Mind Café. 1346 Pittwater Road, Narrabeen; on how this is more than a café, its a community where all can come for food and drink in a safe and non-judgmental environment, focussing on inclusion and mental health
- on ensuring the council takes tackling weeds - especially new and emerging ones taking over local bushland and waterways
- the beautiful 2024 ECO Calendar with monthly tips to inspire better choices for the environment
- on the Citizens Climate Lobby CCL.org.au. "Carbon solution levy"
- on the March in March for Forests events; Labor still logging the Great Koala Park and Tasmanian Liberals want to open up 40,000 hectares to log.
NBCAN events are free to all, but we need to cover our minimal expenses from donations to our begging jar. We keep a rigorous account of all money’s for anyone to scrutinise if they have any concerns. If you can contribute please visit: nbcan.com.au/beggingjar
The Long Lunch
On Sunday April 21 NBCAN is holding fundraiser, 'The Long Lunch'.
This event hopes to raise enough funds to buy a PA system for the Northern Beaches Climate Action and its 47 Groups to share to use at the NBCAN Soapbox and other events.
This will be held on beautiful acreage in Ingleside.
Enjoy drinks and canapes on arrival, followed by a delicious buffet and home-made desserts, while listening to an eclectic mix of music from great local talent.
There will be a Silent auction with great prizes, art, pottery and plants for sale.
If you can't attend but still wish to donate, please use our "Scan to pay" QR code and thank you for your generosity.
