Spring Lawn Care

Springtime is a season where we feed everything growing in our gardens to encourage and support new growth and strengthen each plant prior to the heady summer days to come. Your lawn is no exception to this and a little work put in now will ensure you have a healthy spread of green when the weather becomes hotter and drier.

Just as we benefit from a massage to stimulate circulation, our lawns benefit from a good firm raking. During Winter our lawns and the soil supporting them often becomes compacted while the blades and roots may die off and this will reduce the health of lawn. Raking removes dead blades of grass, leaves and creates aeration and loosens up matted patches. If your lawn’s soil is very hard it is suggested you use a steel rake to create points into the lawn to add extra air flow and water and loosen compaction. This will also encourage new growth.

The other base for a good lawn is having a close look at its condition each Spring to determine whether it’s in good health. If you have a lot of moss plants amongst the lawn this is a sign of soil acidity. Lawns thrive on a neutral soil PH and applying lime will correct this.

If you have bare patches due to dog frolics, heavy traffic or water run-off and pooling you will need to re-seed these areas. Applying a slow-release nitrogen fertilizer as you do will benefit the new seedlings. Once the seed has germinated and you have given it the first cut, lawn experts recommend a quick release nitrogen fertilizer to boost its health. Sowing on a still day, due to this seed’s weight, is always a good choice. You don’t want the seed being blown away before it can grow.

If you fertilised your lawn in Autumn your lawn will generally be still using that in Spring. A lighter feeding is recommended for Spring and any organic fertilizer is going to be better for something that is organic itself and for the environment surrounding or adjoined to it.

The last Spring Care pointer is to weed now; bindis will multiply as the weather gets warmer and more Spring rains fall. This week a profusion of dandelion flowers out, if you’re not going to use the leaves in salads and don’t want these bright yellow flowers as part of your lawn, shows weeds will multiply, and quickly, if not attended to.

Installing New Turf

If you have encouraged a flock of local Bush Turkeys to do as they wish to your lawn during Winter you may want to set aside another area for them to play in in the garden and reclaim that lawn area to entertain family and friends over the coming Spring and Summer. This is a simple step by step process that will take around 2 hours if you are organised.

Part of our lawn area after the 2024 Winter Bush Turkey Waltzes Program; mostly dusty dirt

We thank the great team at Johnson Brothers Mitre 10 Mona Vale, particularly Susan in the garden centre, who advised on the best soil we could get delivered the next morning for this one-woman-job, and ensured the right delivery truck was used so it could be offloaded a whole 1 metre from where it would be used. If you have a driveway that's half-a-cliff like ours, let the great trained team at Johnson Brothers know and they will find a way to get it there - right there!

Johnson Brothers Mitre 10 are also sympathetic to those on a personal 'no plastic that cannot be recycled' campaign, will use local suppliers of products and equipment - so your $ goes back into locals - and manage to fit in with you, even though there are half a gazillion of us undertaking early Spring garden jobs at the moment.

EG: 3pm Wednesday - 'could I get 30+ bags of soil that will work for under new turf, that I can lift, and that can be delivered up our driveway by 10am tomorrow?....'

By 9am the next day:

Step 1 - Measure Turf Area and Choose which Grass to install

Measure your area to calculate how much lawn you need to buy. Measure the length and width of your area then multiply together. For irregular shapes divide into smaller squares or triangles. Calculate each section then add these together.

It is also crucial to choose a turf that will do well in local conditions and on local soil types. Also take into account how hardy it needs - is this lawn area able to withstand the Bush Turkeys, the Summer cricket match or is it an infrequently used area?

We went with Eureka Kikuyu Turf as it has a High Wear Tolerance, it is one of those grass types used on sports fields so would be more Bush Turkey proof than others, has a High Weed Resistance as well as being a brilliant green that needs a lot of sunlight - which it will get at this spot during most of the day.

Eureka Kikuyu Turf also has runners so will grow to fill in any bare patches. You can boost the patchy areas and help the turf by using some Lawn Repair Lawn Seed in those areas.

When ordering your turf remember that suppliers advise it is critical to install it immediately after it is delivered and ensure that on the date they will deliver it you will be there to install it. Ask the delivery chap to place it in the shade until you are ready to unroll it, and again, not too far from where it will be placed so it's easier to do.

Step 2 - Prepare Turf Area

Be sure to remove all existing grass and weeds. Remove any rocks, stones, weeds or existing lawn. Rake your area smooth and level soil to a height of 100mm. The prepared area should sit 30mm lower than the edging, pathways or borders.

Ensure the soil is, for our area if you have a lot of clay in the dirt, a 20% sand to 80% soil mix.

Once you have put in the soil mix dampen it and evenly spread a launcher fertiliser. Do this 1-2weeks prior to installing the turf if possible or at least a few days prior to.

Then build up the soil to that 10cm so the turf has a good base to establish itself through.

We put a sprinkling of fertiliser than the sand over the top then the soil over this and raked to mix them together and make the area level:

Step 3 - Installing Turf Slabs

To install your turf the soil should have some moisture. Not too wet but not too dry. It is best to start laying your turf along a straight edge e.g. driveway, path, fence etc.

The rows of turf should be staggered like a brick pattern, ensuring all edges are neatly tucked in and there is no overlapping. If you are laying on a slope, it’s best to lay your turf across the slope rather than down, you may need to hold your turf in place with a stake until there is enough root structure to hold the turf in place. Use a sharp knife or a shovel to shape around odd shapes, garden beds, trees etc. After laying your turf smooth out any air pockets by giving your turf a light roll with a water filled roller if you have one; this will ensure good contact between the roots of the turf and the soil.

Step 4 - Water the new lawn

It is crucial to water immediately after installing. Australian suppliers of turf recommend an initial DEEP watering.

Watering 2 times per day is recommended after that, early in the morning and early in the afternoon, but don’t flood it. Short 5 minute waters are best. If you have sub surface irrigation you must water from above until the roots have established.

Do not leave a pool of water on your turf under direct sun - this will burn the leaf. Choose a time when there is shade on the lawn until it has established itself.

During hot weather or when installing larger quantities begin watering once you have laid half or a small section. Water in a methodical fashion ensuring that each slab has been watered thoroughly and evenly. The soil under the slabs must be kept damp until the roots have established.

Roll the lawn with a water filled or concrete roller after the initial water, this will ensure maximum soil contact and will eliminate any air pockets left underneath the turf.

When the turf cannot be easily lifted this means your turf's root system has begun to bind with the soil and may be ready to mow.

For that first mow, the mower should be set at a higher level for the first cut and gradually lowered so the turf is not shorn. Remember to only cut 1/3 of the leaf during any mow.

Step 5 - Fertilise once more

One month after installing, fertilise your new turf with a good slow release lawn fertiliser and water in well. This should be done at the beginning of every Season to ensure a healthy lawn can thrive.
