Local Rural Fires Volunteers Honoured for 570+ years of service
More than five centuries of dedication to the peninsula were recognised on Tuesday September 3, when a group of NSW Rural Fire Service volunteers is honoured.
RFS Assistant Commissioner Viki Campbell was joined by a number of special guests, including Mackellar MP Dr. Sophie Scamps, to present four Long Service Medals and 14 National Medals to 18 volunteers, who collectively boast more than 570 years of service.
"With years of service ranging from 15 to 49 years, many of these volunteers have devoted a significant portion of their lives to protecting others," Assistant Commissioner Campbell said.
"Their professionalism has not gone unnoticed. While they don’t seek praise, tonight's event allows us to publicly acknowledge their unwavering commitment.”
Among those being honoured are three members with more than 45 years of service, each receiving their National Medal 3rd Clasp - Graeme (Tim) MacGregor from Davidson Brigade, Edward (Ted) Carroll from Terrey Hills Brigade, and Anthony (Tony) Jones from Northern Beaches Headquarters Brigade.
“During his tenure as Davidson Brigade President, Graeme MacGregor played a pivotal role in establishing a district-based constitution and led the brigade through the fundraising and expansion of its station,” Assistant Commissioner Campbell said.
“Edward Carroll has been a key figure in the extensions of Terrey Hills' first station and their move into the old headquarters. Known for his passion for training, community education and mentoring new members, Ted has been involved in nearly every social function the brigade has held.
“Anthony Jones has been a vital participant in fighting all major fires within and around Warringah Pittwater and has taken part in numerous out-of-area deployments across the state, responding to fires, floods, and other emergencies.”
Further recognitions include Tumbledown Dick Rural Fire Brigade members Richard Bouwmans, former Captain and President, and Ben Hallett, former Captain, who were award National Medals, 1st Clasp, meaning they have both given 25 years service protecting NSW and the Northern Beaches community.
The National Medal recognises and celebrates the sustained service, either paid or volunteer, of outstanding Australians who risk their lives or safety to protect or assist the community in enforcement of the law or in times of emergency or natural disaster.
We thank them for their service and are very honoured that they are members of the Tumble family.
A further 6 members from the Northern Beaches Headquarters received their long service medals, amassing a whopping 200+ years between them.
