The other part of welcoming others into your home is offering a comfortable setting to relax in. If you're planning on offering a great place to enjoy outdoors you may want to look at what you want in that space; is there enough shade when you will want to eat, are there enough chairs for a table, is there a lounge setting or do you have the level of privacy you and guests will be happy with?
Wooden outdoor settings are great, especially with a few cushions, but these require regular maintenance. Cleaning them and applying a stain or oil once a year will keep them looking great - just don't apply that oil just prior to wanting to use it. If the setting fades over the years under our strong sun a quick sand back and restain will have it looking like new.

Aluminium and wicker settings would suit our environment best. When not in use protect the wicker from sun fade by covering the setting. Bringing in your cushions will stop them being exposed to weather and prevent damage or colour fade. Aluminium pieces that feature rustproof hardware and a UV-resistant powder-coating finish will last longer.

If you have a pond or fountain you may find the birds and frogs can't keep up with the mozzies and flies - the best way to keep these off your guests and lunch is to buy some sandlewood sticks or citronella candles, that way you're not spraying chemicals that may harm the bugs you want to keep.
If you have an exposed deck the sun will, at some stage during a Summer day, be providing you with more direct sun than may be comfortable. Installing shadecloths that can be retracted when you like, using shade umbrellas with a broad reach, and raising these early in the morning prior to the sun being on your deck or vernadah to keep shade there for longer, or using a portable gazebo will keep things cooler.

If the houses or blocks of flats have grown up around you, or neighbours new outdoor areas mean they're now looking directly into yours, you can do a few things to keep everything friendly but also give yourself back that bit of privacy you want when entertaining. Installing an outdoor screen, which we'll cover in more detail during January 2017, is a great option. These are easily installed and create little nooks, afford a division between balconies or be a backdrop for plants.
If you prefer to introduce a bit more green, plant out some long length planter boxes with plants such Lilli pillis, native jasmine, Jasminum suavissimum, or even Gardenias to not only perfume your Summer nights but grow some shade. If you like to bring a touch of a eatable garden into a green hedge, plant rosemary mint or stems of cherry tomatoes and cucumbers on stakes - very attractive, very useful and a salad within reach!
