The Vissla Sydney Surf Pro

The Vissla Sydney Surf Pro is bringing top level, international surfing back to the historic and iconic Manly Beach in 2018. Between 24 February and 4 March over 20 countries will be represented in local, junior and World Surf League Qualifying Series 6000 events. Many of the world’s top athletes including those competing in the Championship Tour, in the running for World Champion in 2018 will be in the water ready to super-charge their competitive year in the week before the Quiksilver and Roxy Pro on the Gold Coast.

Not only is the Vissla Sydney Surf Pro significant to the surfers of today, it also pays homage to great champions and legends of Manly’s past. In 2018 the coveted Midget Farrelly award will form part of the Vissla Sydney Surf Pro and recognise the incredible part that Manly has played in Australia’s surfing history. World Titles have been won, hearts have been broken, magic has been made on Manly Beach and the people who were there as participants, pioneers, onlookers all agree that it’s a truly special place.

The Vissla Sydney Surf Pro will this year also host a number of off-beach activations and festivities that will be centralised around the Corso area. Drop into the Steyne Hotel any time of the day to soak up the essence of Manly. Take a stroll down The Corso to enjoy the artisan markets and impeccable gourmet treats, cafes, restaurants and bars.

It’s an event for the whole family, and every member of the local and wider community to enjoy. Surfing brings people together and what better place than Manly to host the perfect balance of surfing, beach life and festival vibes.

The Vissla Sydney Surf Pro will be proudly supported by the NSW Government through its tourism and major events agency, Destination NSW. The event will also be proudly supported by Vissla, Northern Beaches Council, Coastalwatch, WSL and Surfing NSW.

You can stay connected via #SydneySurfPro and the Surfing NSW FacebookInstagramTwitter & YouTube channels.

“We wanted the best possible environment for the surfers and the local community and maximise the interaction between surfers and the fans,” said Luke Madden, CEO of Surfing NSW. “This will help to create an amazing experience for all.”

The Vissla Sydney Surf Pro evolved out of discussions with World Surf League, Manly Council, local MP James Griffin, Surfing NSW, Destination NSW and Vissla.

“What a terrific demonstration of community spirit and clear intent from our local businesses to support the Vissla Sydney Surf Pro at Manly Beach,” said Mr. Griffin. “The event will showcase Manly to the world and be a great boost for our businesses and create a wonderful time for locals. I’m grateful to all the businesses who have come on board and look forward to welcoming others as we get closer to the event.”

“It’s really exciting for World Surf League and our surfers to be able to have such a large scale event in Sydney,” said WSL Australia/Oceania Regional Manager Will Hayden-Smith. “We’re ecstatic to work with partners like Destination NSW, Surfing NSW, Vissla and the Northern Beaches Council who share our vision for surfing and caring for the environment. It’s an exciting time counting down to this brand new event.”’

COMPETITORS GATHER IN MANLY FOR THE VISSLA SYDNEY SURF PRO.

MANLY BEACH, SYDNEY
Friday, February 23, 2018
The Vissla Sydney Surf Pro is set to kick off tomorrow with the Key Sun Zinke Sydney Pro Junior opening up the first weekend of competition.

With 6,000 QS points up for grabs, over 200 of the world’s best surfers will be in attendance as they look to kick off their 2018 campaign in style.

The Key Sun Zinke Sydney Pro Junior will see just under 100 of Australia’s and the world’s most promising junior surfers partaking in the action with the finals presentation set to take place on Sunday, 25 February.

All the action in the QS6000 event will begin on Monday, 26 February.

Event top seed and 2018 World Surf League (WSL) Qualifying Series (QS) surfer Keanu Asing (Hawaii) is excited to get a solid result under his belt prior to the start of the 2018 Championship Tour and build on his momentum ahead of the 2018 Quiksilver Pro.

“It’s great to be back in Manly for the Vissla Sydney Surf Pro,” said Asing. “The Northern Beaches have always been a favourite stop for me and being Hawaiian, I feel some ties to the place thanks to Duke Kahanamoku first surfing here over 100 years ago. Hopefully, the waves turn it on over the course of the next week and we see some exciting surfing from the world’s best.”

2017 WSL Championship Tour Rookie of the Year and Sydney local Connor O’Leary echoed Asing’s sentiments.

“It’s amazing for me to have an event like this in Sydney,” said O’Leary. “To have it at the start of the year is awesome, especially just before the Championship Tour (CT) begins as it really helps me to get some momentum for competition. It gives you a huge confidence boost going into the year. Manly is the surfing hub of Sydney. Obviously, Layne (Beachley), Midget (Farrelly) and Barton (Lynch) and people like that have all come from Manly, so it has a lot of significance."

The entire event will kick off at 7.30am tomorrow with the opening rounds of the Key Sun Zinke Sydney Pro Junior.

All the NSW professional surfing action gets underway from early January with the World Junior Championships, followed by the Vissla NSW Pro Surf Series, The nudie Australian Boardriders Battle National Final, Surfest and the Vissla Sydney Surf Pro.

The Vissla Sydney Surf Pro will be proudly supported by the NSW Government through its tourism and major events agency, Destination NSW. The event will also be proudly supported by Vissla, Northern Beaches Council, WSL and Surfing NSW.

The 2018 Vissla Sydney Surf Pro and Sydney Women's Pro will be held from February 26th  - March 4th. For more information, highlights and images, head to www.worldsurfleague.com or sydneysurfpro.com and on the WSL App.

MANLY DELIVERS FOR THE OPENING DAY OF THE KEY SUN ZINKE SYDNEY PRO JUNIOR.

SATURDAY 24 FEBRUARY, 2018
The 2018 Vissla Sydney Surf Pro got off to a flying start today as the Key Sun Zinke Sydney Pro Junior kicked off in punchy two-foot peaks at Manly Beach.

Te Kehukehu Butler’s (NZL) Key Sun Zinke Sydney Pro Junior campaign began superbly as he tore apart the playful peaks to post a 16.25 heat total. Butler linked together a chain of powerful forehand snaps to notch up the aforementioned score and earn himself a position in the second round.

“I was so excited to turn up and see how fun the little waves were,” said Butler. “I’ve had a second and third place finish in my last two Pro Junior events in Bells and Newcastle, so I’m really hoping I can go the extra step here in Manly. Hopefully, these little waves continue.”

Having recently scored the mentorship of two-time World Champion Tyler Wright, Central Coast native Caleb Tancred (Avoca, NSW) used some of the lessons she’s imparted to take out an impressive round one victory. Tancred synced his repertoire of forehand hits with Manly’s righthanders, notching up a 15.30 two-wave heat total. Tancred will meet fellow Central Coaster Jackson Roberts (Bateau Bay, NSW), George Pittar (Manly, NSW) and Dextar Muskens (Coolangatta, Qld) in round two tomorrow.

“There’s a good little bank down here at Manly,” said Tancred. “There’s a couple of rights off the back of the rip so I was stoked to jag a couple of little ones. I was lucky to go to Hawaii with Glenn “Micro” Hall and Tyler, I learnt so much. Tyler is so cruisey, but when it comes to heat time she’s very focused to so it’s cool to be around her and take notes from that.”

Surfing across the Sydney Women’s Pro and the Key Sun Zinke Sydney Pro Junior, Zahli Kelly (Qld) made her intentions clear as she posted an impressive 13.15 total. Kelly performed an array of turns well beyond her years to claim the win ahead of recent 2018 Carve Pro runner-up Molly Picklum (Shelly Beach, NSW) who finished in second position.

“The waves were kind of mushy out there but there were still plenty of them and lots of opportunities. I was just looking for waves with a good little wall,” said Kelly. “This is my first time coming to Manly, I’m excited to be here for both the Pro Juniors and the QS 6000 to get some points in both events. It’d be good to make it back into World Juniors, but it’s not my main focus this year. I just want to go out every event and have fun and learn more.”

Having honed her backhand attack on the long righthanders of Snapper Rocks, Alyssa Lock (Tweed Heads, NSW) used a variety of backside snaps and carves to muster up a near-perfect 9.25 wave score. Lock threw buckets of spray as she nailed turn-after-turn to lock in the previously mentioned score and seal a position into the second round.

“I got a nine-point-ride and I wasn’t really expecting the score,” said Lock. “I knew it was a good wave but I just didn’t think it would be that a high of a score. It was a good surprise. The wave gave me some good sections so I just kept on hitting them. I think I got about four turns to the beach. I’ve been here at Manly for the QS and the Pro Junior before. It’s definitely good to be back and there’s a lot of waves so I’m stoked. I’ve seen the beach pumping before so I know it has a lot of potential. Hopefully we get some more of that over the weekend.”

The Key Sun Zinke Sydney Pro Junior will wrap up at Manly Beach tomorrow.

TANCRED AND FULTON TAKE TOP HONOURS AT KEY SUN ZINKE SYDNEY PRO JUNIOR.

MANLY BEACH, SYDNEY
Sunday, February 25, 2018
Caleb Tancred (Avoca, NSW) and Sophia Fulton (Mollymook, NSW) have taken top honours at the Key Sun Zinke Sydney Pro Junior following an action-packed day filled with high scores and tricky conditions.

Having not had a podium finish for roughly three-years, Caleb Tancred (Avoca, NSW) was able to get the monkey off his back by taking out the Men’s division in the Key Sun Zinke Sydney Pro Junior. In what was an action-packed final filled with torrential rain and power outages, Tancred was able to gain the upper hand thanks to posting an excellent 8.50 wave score. Tancred then backed up his position in the top spot thanks to a 8.75 score and was able to comfortably claim the victory.

“It was my goal to win a Pro Junior event this year and hopefully finish in the top four to qualify for the World Juniors,” said Tancred. “With all the rain and the power blacking out, I wasn’t sure if I was in first, second or third. I knew all guys in this final could have got decent scores, so I was flying blind a little bit. I haven’t been on the podium for three years or so, so to get this is definitely a great feeling.”

Spending the majority of the final in the fourth spot, Kyuss King (Byron Bay, NSW) managed to leapfrog his way straight into the runner-up position thanks to an impressive 8.20 wave score in the dying five minutes. King looked on point throughout the duration of the entire event, consistently posting excellent scores over his entire campaign.

“I feel quite good with this result,” said King. “I felt like a had a few good heats so I couldn’t be happier. My gameplan in that final was to strictly wait for a wave that was good enough to win, so I stuck to my guns and managed to get that one 8.20, but I couldn’t find the backup.”

Surfing with a maturity beyond her years, Sophia Fulton (Mollymook, NSW) saved one of her best performances to claim top honours. Fulton executed a barrage of mammoth turns to finish the heat with an impressive 15.50 two-wave heat total and take the victory ahead of fellow event standouts Zahli Kelly (Qld), Molly Picklum (Shelly Beach, NSW) and Shino Matsuda (JPN) who claimed second, third and fourth respectively.

“It was fun, but I got pretty lucky to get those few at the start that got me out in front for the rest of the final. This is my first time surfing in Manly and it’s been a good weekend, especially when the sun was out,” said Fulton. "Pam Burridge is my coach, she grew surfing here so it’s good to have her experience and secrets to surfing North Steyne.”

Zahli Kelly (Qld) put on a dominant performance over the course of the Key Sun Zinke Sydney Pro Junior, but unfortunately was unable to gain the edge over Fulton in the final.

"The waves were fun but a little inconsistent,” said Kelly.  “When I needed the score at the end it just closed out and didn’t help me, but I got to lock in the two seven-point-rides early. It’s been a lot of surfing this weekend but I’m excited for the QS event this week if the waves and conditions stay like this."

The Vissla Sydney Surf Pro QS 6000 events will begin tomorrow.

TOP SEED NIKKI VAN DIJK TO LEAD THE CHARGE AT SYDNEY WOMEN’S PRO.

With less than a day until the Sydney Women’s Pro hits Manly, some of the world’s best female surfers are preparing for the WSL Qualifying Series 6000 event. With valuable QS rankings points up for grabs, Manly will become the epicentre of world surfing for Sydney’s biggest surfing event.

As Manly is the home of one of her biggest WSL victories, Victorian Nikki Van Dijk (AUS) is pumped to return to the iconic strip of coast to compete at this year’s Sydney Women’s Pro. It will play as the perfect kick-start to the 2018 Championship Tour (CT) season.

“I’m feeling really great heading into the 2018 season,” Van Dijk said. “I’ve had a great off-season spending some much needed time at home, but I'm ready to get back on the road. I can’t wait to head to Manly, it’s one of my favourite places in Australia. I have friends that live on the Northern Beaches so have spent a lot of time there plus it holds great competitive memories. As I have won at Manly before I definitely feel really comfortable surfing and competing there.”

Although Van Dijk spends the majority of the year competing for a shot at the World Championship, these major Qualifying Series events provide the perfect proving ground for her and her CT counterparts.

“The field at Manly is crazy,” Van Dijk continued. “Events like the Sydney Women’s Pro are a great way to get your year rolling and the best way to warm you up for the CT's. The level of competition and talent at these QS events are so high, every heat is tough.”

There will be over 10 females from the elite Championship Tour competing at the Women’s Sydney Pro when it kicks off in just under a week. WSL Australia / Oceania Regional Manager Will Hayden-Smith is excited to see the worlds best continue surfing’s great lineage with Manly.

“Manly has so much surfing history over the past 100 plus years and WSL are excited to work closely with Surfing NSW for the latest chapter. We have 10 of the top 18 female surfers coming to the event and it’s exciting for us to have the likes of Nikki Van Dijk who’s won a major event here in the past coming to town again. There are early indications that we should have some really fun surf and I’m looking forward to watching our biggest event in Sydney get underway.”

In addition to the QS components of the Vissla Sydney Surf Pro, the WSL sanctioned Key Sun Zinke Sydney Pro Junior event will also take place on the opening weekend of the 24 – 25 February.

All the NSW professional surfing action gets underway from early January with the World Junior Championships, followed by the Vissla NSW Pro Surf Series, The nudie Australian Boardriders Battle National Final, Surfest and the Vissla Sydney Pro.

The Vissla Sydney Surf Pro will be proudly supported by the NSW Government through its tourism and major events agency, Destination NSW. The event will also be proudly supported by Vissla, Northern Beaches Council, WSL and Surfing NSW.
