Lennox Chell and Lily Macdonald take out Under-18 NSW Junior Titles

Lennox Chell (Avoca) and Lily MacDonald (Freshwater) have taken out the top honours in the Under-18 division at the Woolworths NSW Junior State Titles pres. by Ocean and Earth at Sawtell Beach.
Goofy-footed dynamo and former Under-14 NSW Champion Lennox Chell (Avoca) will be heading back to the Central Coast with his head held high after taking out the Under-18 Boys division. Chell put on a consistent display of backside rail-surfing in the final to finish with a respectable 12.93 two-wave heat total and claim the title ahead of fellow goofy-footer Jarvis Earle (Cronulla) who finished in the runner up spot.
Lily Macdonald (Freshwater) fought a tight battle with her fellow finalists to claim the coveted Under-18 Girls title. The exciting natural-footer picked off a handful of decent righthanders in the final to post a solid 13.93 two-wave heat total and get the win by a slim 0.2 margin ahead of fellow northern beaches surfer Cedar Leigh-Jones (Avalon) who was unable to muster up 5.94 wave score needed Macdonald’s lead.

The event will see some of NSW’s best junior surfers competing for a coveted state title when the event kicks off from the 5th – 12th August 2020.
Unlike previous years, where all qualifiers for the Woolworths NSW Junior State Titles pres. by Ocean and Earth were determined by eight individual regional titles, the 2020 event will invite all junior competitors to enter in their respective age divisions.
The last two days of the event will comprise of the NSW School Surfing Titles. 2020 will be the tenth year Surfing NSW will combine the NSW School Surfing Titles into the event.
Competitors will be vying for an NSW Junior Title and in turn, earn their position into the upcoming 2020 Australian Junior Surfing Titles, which will take place in Queensland at the end of the year.
Former competitors in the NSW Junior State Titles pres. by Ocean and Earth include current World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour (CT) surfers Owen, Mikey and Tyler Wright, Sally Fitzgibbons, Matt Wilkinson, Wade Carmichael and Connor O'Leary.
The event is fully mobile in the Coffs Harbour area with Macauleys, Park Beach, Diggers, Gallows and Sawtell all venue options.
The Woolworths NSW Junior State Titles pres. by Ocean and Earth will adhere to strict COVID-19 policies and regulations outlined by the NSW Government. All Surfing NSW events are in line with the current NSW public health order and we work with Sport NSW and NSW Office of Sport on all plans. Harley Walters (Angourie) and Rosie Smart (Sawtell) have taken out the Under-16 NSW Junior State Titles at Coffs Harbour in dreamy three-foot surf at Sawtell Beach.
Harley Walters (Angourie) campaign through the Woolworths NSW Junior State Titles pres. by Ocean and Earth hit its peak in the final with the goofy-footer shining in the righthanders at Sawtell. The talented goofy-footer (and brother of 2019 Australian Pro Junior Champion Dakoda Walters) showed similar skills as he posted a near-perfect 9.23 wave score early in the heat which ultimately allowed him to gain the upper-hand in the final. Runner-up Winter Vincent also shone in the final, posting a respectable 14.33 two-wave heat total, but was unable to find the necessary 9.14 score needed to take the lead off Walters.
Local competitor Rosie Smart (Sawtell) claimed the title on home soil, surfing a solid heat over the course of her finals campaign. Smart gained the upper hand in the heat thanks to a near-perfect 9.00 wave score that allowed her to gain the edge on her closest rivals and take the win. Holly Wishart (Werri) will be heading home with her head held high after finishing in the runner-up position. Wishart put on a valiant performance but was unable to find the 8.51 wave score needed to snatch away Smart’s lead.

NSW junior surfers quest for a state title climaxed today at the Woolworths NSW Junior State Titles pres. by Ocean and Earth with some of the state’s best young surfers hitting the water for heats in punchy three-to-four foot surf at Sawtell.
Oceanna Rogers (Shell Harbour) surfed well beyond her years in the Under-16 Girls division, hammering sections with a combination of style and gusto. The tiny Illawarra surfer shone in the overhead surf posting a mammoth 17.50 two-wave heat total which consisted of a near-perfect 9.50 wave score and an 8.00. Heat runner up and local Rosie Smart (Sawtell) put on a valiant performance posting a 16.07 heat total but was unable to jump ahead of her Rogers who sealed the heat win with the two aforementioned scores.
Keira Buckpitt (Culburra) and Zahlia Short (Austinmer) remained two of the biggest standouts of the event with both surfers notching up heat totals 16.00. Both surfers will make their next appearance in the Under-16 Girls quarterfinals tomorrow.
Fresh off his incredible performance in the recent big swells in Sydney, Kobi Clements (Collaroy) showed his small-wave game was just as mind-blowing as he smashed a giant 16.76 two-wave heat total in the third round of the Under-18 Boys. Clements executed some of the most powerful and technical snaps of the entire event to earn himself a position into the fourth round.

Central Coast goofy-footer Lennox Chell (Avoca) made his return to the NSW State Junior Titles after a year off last year and proceeded to link together a chain of incredible backside snaps and carves. Chell finished the heat with a solid 16.60 two-wave heat total which left his fellow competitors chasing two-wave combinations to take away his lead.
Jordan Turansky (Cronulla), Grayson Hinrichs (Bondi) and Jarvis Earle (Cronulla) flew the flag for Sydney surfers south of the Harbour Bridge with all surfers posting heat totals in excess of 15.00. All three surfers will make their next appearance in the fourth round.

The Woolworths NSW Junior State Titles pres. by Ocean and Earth shifted south to Sawtell for day three of competition where competitors were greeted with picturesque four-foot conditions as they attempted to make it past the third round of the competition.
Hughie Vaughan (Bateau Bay) charged in the overhead conditions finding a handful of decent barrels and solid walls to execute an array of exciting manoeuvres. The former NSW and Australian Champion was rewarded with an excellent 8.00 wave score in the heat which allowed him to solidify his position into the fourth round where he’ll meet Xavier Bryce (Manly), Mannix Greentree-Squiers (Corrimal) and Isaak Brown (Norah Head).

Northern Beaches dynamo Winter Vincent (Manly) made a giant impact in his opening Under-16 Boys heat posting a giant 16.50 two-wave heat total, the highest of the round. Vincent executed a handful of powerful snaps and carves in the heat to take the heat victory and earn himself a spot into the fourth round.

Reigning Under-16 Boys NSW Champion Lennix Smith (Barrack Point) showed he was eager to bag himself back-to-back titles, taking an impressive victory in his opening exchange. The Illawarra natural-footer notched up a decent 13.54 two-wave heat total to claim a win ahead of fellow event standout Nate Hopkins (Noraville).
Other standouts included Harley Walters (Angourie) and Oliver Ryssenbeek (Merewether) who both posted heat totals in the 14.00 range to earn themselves spots into the fourth round.
Kasey Hargreaves (Stanwell Park) put on a dominant display of surfing in the Under-18 repechage rounds, posting an excellent 8.67 wave score. Hargreaves surfed beyond her years in the conditions, nailing an exciting chain of manoeuvres to earn her spot back into the main round of competition.

The Under-18 divisions of the Woolworths NSW Junior State Titles pres. by Ocean and Earth got underway today with some of the state’s most promising young surfers hitting the playful two-to-three foot conditions.
Sunny Whitby-Otto (Merewether) put some early scores on the board finding a handful of fun righthanders in his opening Under-18 Boys heat. The Novocastrian natural-footer set an early precedent in the heat attacking big sections and as a result posted an 8.50 and an 8.67 to amass a giant 17.17 two-wave heat total to leave his opposition chasing two-wave combinations of scores to take the top spot.
Koda Killorn (Maroubra) followed a similar trajectory to Whitby-Otto posting an excellent 8.73 wave score in his opening Under-18 Boys round one heat. Killorn will make his next appearance in the third round.
Byron Stapleton (Avoca) and Benny Wilson (Narrabeen) went toe-to-toe and blow-for-blow in their opening Under-18 Boys heat with both surfers trading off a handful of decent scores for critical manoeuvres, however the Central Coast surfer was able to gain the upper hand thanks to a respectable 14.60 two-wave total and take the win ahead of Wilson by a 0.6 margin.

Gabi Spake (Collaroy) made her intentions clear in the Under-18 Girls with the Northern Beaches surfer notching up a giant 14.33 two-wave heat total. Spake surfed well beyond her years in the heat, surfing with a healthy mix of power, style and grace to post the previously mentioned two-wave heat total.
April Davey (Kirrawee), Kyla Whitfield (Warriewood), Milli Allport (Shelly Beach), Jasmine Mccorquodale (Bateau Bay) and Charlize Everitt (Boomerang Beach) also claimed first round victories and sealed themselves spots straight into the third round.

The Woolworths NSW Junior State Titles pres. by Ocean and Earth saw an action-packed day of surfing today as the the Under-16 divisions kicked off in playful two-foot surf.
Following a similar path to his older brother Dakoda, Harley Walters (Angourie) blew up in his opening Under-16 Boys heat, nailing a wild array of backside snaps and forehand tube rides. Walters set an early pace in the heat, posting an excellent 8.33 wave score that allowed him to gain the upperhand in the heat and ultimately take the win.
Port Stephens surfer Eden Hasson (Boat Harbour) made his presence felt in the Under-16 Boys division, nailing a massive 15.67 wave score. Hasson executed a handful of impressive backhand turns to notch up the aforementioned score and seal himself a spot straight into the third round.
Kyan Falvey (Cabarita) posted the highest two-wave heat total of the event thus far, notching up a gigantic 16.47 two-wave heat total. The talented north coast surfer posted an excellent 8.17 and an 8.30 to amass the previously mentioned total and earn his spot straight into the third round.
Duke Wrencher (Byron Bay), Nate Hopkins (Norah Head) and Dylan Fawle (Newport Beach) all fired warning shots over the heads of their fellow competitors, posting notable wave and heat scores. All three surfers claimed victories in their heats and as a result earned a spot straight into round three.
Rosie Smart (Sawtell) flew the flag for the local surfers, finishing her first round Under-16 Girls heat with a solid 15.93 two-wave heat total. The local competitor showed her extensive knowledge of Coffs Harbour beachbreaks to gain the score and ensure she claimed the opening round victory.
Quincy Symonds (Tweed Heads), Tyla Hurst (Port Kembla), Niamh Sharpe (Lennox Head), Zahlia Short (Austinmer), Natalie Fensom (Newcastle), Bella Morrison (Coffs Harbour) and Bonnie Coulter (Warriewood) all followed Smart’s lead and were able to claim Under-16 Girls round one victories, ensuring they skipped the repechage rounds.
