The green caps were out in force and regularly on the podium at the Sydney Northern Beaches Masters Water Championships. It was great being at our home beach again. The conditions were testing with a 3 – 5 ft ESE swell coming in, which was ok at high tide and interesting as the tide dropped.
The 17 master competitors had their best results day ever with almost everyone getting a silver at least. It was fantastic to see our ranks strengthening with a number of “kids” – Tori Gorman (6 golds) and Andrew Webster (1 gold) competing in the 30s age group and Saul Brown (2 golds) and Nick Brook (1 silver) competing in the 40s age group.
Our “mid life” group again performed strongly, led by Fi Rae (8 golds), Annabelle Chapman (6 golds) and Adriaan van der Wallen (2 golds). Our “elders”, as usual, showed us how to do it with Peter Sledge (2 gold), Gordon Lang (2 gold) and Doug Ferris (3 silvers).

Another amazing day for our masters team, starting off with 4 golds in the 2 km / 1 km beach run and finishing with a gold in the flags.
We welcomed new members Quentin Reeves (who won the 30 – 34 2 km run and then turned around and won the Open 2 km run – beating an Australian Champion), Tim Markovitch (silver in the beach relay and 5th in the flags), Saul Brown (who added to his impressive water golds with a silver in the beach relay and a 4th in the sprint) and Andy Hogan (silvers in the 2 km run and beach relay).
Great to see our “regulars” back on the beach and in the green cap (without the need for a hi vis vest). Ben Anderson who answered a last minute call to help with the points, Karen Begg, Andrew Webster, Tony Way, Tim Gates, Nick Brook and Rob Davies who backed up from last Saturday and Sarah Webster, Digger Chrystal and Mac Elsegood who saved themselves for the beach events. All gained valuable team points.
Special mention must go to our masters team members Fi Rae (who obtained bronzes in the Open female ski – an absolutely amazing result - and Female Taplin) and Adriaan van der Wallen (who obtained 4th in the Open board rescue with Jeremy English). Very special mention to Tim Gates, Adriaan van der Wallen and Gordon Lang who were part of our very successful Open Belt Race Team – our swimmer Josh Ferris touched the can with around 10 metres of line to spare to win a silver.

SNB Championships - Overall Results
Final pointscore for the SNB Masters (including water and beach).
1st: Queenscliff - 409 pts; 2nd: Palm Beach - 387 pts; 3rd: Manly - 257 pts; 4th: Newport - 229 pts.
I am very humbled by this result and by the calibre and commitment of the whole team. To be within 22 points of the Queenscliff masters juggernaut and to beat such strong clubs as Manly and Newport by such a huge amount of points is spectacular.
I would like to thank every team member for their support and involvement and to all who made such a result possible. We have now set a very high benchmark for the future.
