Start Of The Bushfire Danger Period – Fire Permits Required

Given recent weather conditions, the lack of rain and a number of Total Fire Bans, the risk of bushfire in our community is already quite high. In fact, we’ve had a number of bushfires in the local area already.

However, the 1st October marks the start of the official Bushfire Danger Period which will run through until at least 31st March.

During this period residents wishing to do hazard reduction or pile burns will require a Fire Permit as well as a Hazard Reduction Certificate.
Fire Permits are valid for a period of 21 days.

They are automatically suspended during Total Fire Bans and periods when the Bushfire danger is rated Very High or above. Before issuing a Fire Permit, the Permit Issuing Officer will need to be convinced that appropriate plans are in place for supervising the fire, containing the fire and extinguishing the fire.

You are also still required to notify neighbours and the Rural Fire Service at least 24 hours before you plan to do the burn and before you light the fire.

Other conditions may also be imposed when the Permit is issued.
You should read the Before You Light That Fire document which is available on the RFS web site.

If you need a Hazard Reduction Certificate this can be arranged by contacting the Northern Beaches Fire Control Centre on (02) 9450 3000.

When you have the Hazard Reduction Certificate you can obtain a Fire Permit by contacting the Scotland Island Brigade on 9999 4404 (or the West Pittwater Brigade for offshore residents on 9997 3795) or the Northern Beaches Fire Control Centre.

RPAYC Awarded Yachting NSW Club Of The Year And Coach Of The Year Awards

September 20, 2017: by Australian Sailing
On Saturday 16 September the NSW ACT Sailing Award winners were announced at a glittering twilight function at the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia.  With over 50 nominations received across 10 categories, it made the job of the selection panel very difficult to select winners in each of the categories.

Richard Hudson President of Yachting NSW commented; “The range of nominations received was immense.  It was marvellous to review the nominations and reflect on the success and contribution in which athletes, participants, volunteers from across NSW and ACT have made in sailing locally and worldwide."

"Nominations included winners of National Championships (both in Australia and abroad), World championships, Olympic & Paralympic medal success, and participation in the Americas Cup.  The high calibre of nominations received highlighted the strength of sailing in NSW and the ACT.”

Declan Brennan Regional Manager NSW & ACT was also impressed by the activities of the nominated clubs, Discover Sailing Centres and volunteers;

“It was great to see The Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club take out the prize for Club of the year in their sesquicentennial year.  With their diverse range of sailing activities in dinghies, yachts, in both performance and participation and their work with the Wounded Warrior project and the Invictus Games, the Alfreds set a very high benchmark as an extremely active and diverse club.

"The Canberra Yacht Club is one of the busiest Discover Sailing Centres in the country despite the cold Canberra winter is a testimony on just how well regarded their sailing programmes are within the local community.  Awarding the Volunteer of the Year award to Jack Winning from the Lane Cove 12’s is a long overdue acknowledgement to Jack and his efforts at the club.  Its estimated that since the early 1980’s Jack has taught close to 3,000 people at Lane Cove 12’s.

"And finally The heroic actions of Simon Hoffman in saving the life of a fellow competitor during the 2017 29er World Championships at Long Beach California made Simon a worthy winner of the Presidents’ award for an exceptional contribution to sailing," Declan concluded.

The full list of winners of the 2017 NSW ACT Sailing Awards can be found below.

New Funding For Anzac Community Projects

15 September 2017
Member for Pittwater Rob Stokes today announced new funding is available to help communities protect and repair local war memorials and support projects which commemorate the service of current and former NSW service men and women.

$175,000 is available through the Community War Memorials Fund (CWMF) and the Anzac Community Grants Program (ACGP).

The CWMF provides grants of up to $10,000 for local war memorial projects, including conservation works and protection.

The ACGP provides grants of up to $2,000 to schools, community and veterans groups to educate the community on the service and sacrifice of military personnel, support activities benefiting veterans, and engage with the community.

“Our war memorials are lasting tributes to those in our community who have served and those who have made the ultimate sacrifice,” Rob Stokes said today.

“These stories echo down generations, through families and through communities.

“The Centenary of Anzac is an important reminder of the freedom with which we have been bequeathed.

“CWMF and ACGP funds assist community members and organisations in caring for local memorials and provide an opportunity to honour and support our veterans – young and old,” Rob Stokes said.

Applications for both grant programs are open until Remembrance Day, Saturday 11 November 2017. For more information, please visit:www.veteransnsw.smartygrants.com.au or

Fielding Applications For Sporting Grants

7 September 2017
Member for Pittwater Rob Stokes is encouraging sporting clubs to apply for funds under this year’s Local Sport Grant Program.

Grants up to $20,000 will be awarded as part of a $10 million sports grants package announced by the NSW Government.

The NSW Government’s focus this year will be to encourage more girls and young women into local sporting programs.

Around half of all Australian boys are active through a sports club during their childhood compared with just 33 per cent of girls, and the participation rate for girls drops sharply after they turn 12.

“Pittwater has a wide range of opportunities to be involved in sports and it’s fantastic to see the fields, courts and waves full on weekends,” Rob Stokes said today.

“There are many girls and young women actively involved in Pittwater’s sporting clubs and these grants are a great opportunity to further boost programs and participation rates.

“Pittwater is home to many sportswomen who have represented our state and country and we would love to see this increase,” Rob Stokes said.

While this year’s program is particularly focused on encouraging more girls and young women into sport, the Local Sport Grant Program welcomes applications from all incorporated, not-for-profit sporting groups looking to introduce new programs, upgrade facilities or improve participation levels.

Applications are now open and will be received until 6 October 2017.

Monday September 18, 2017
Frenchs Forest Bushland Cemetery invites the community to its third annual Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Evening on Sunday, 15 October.

“We hold this service to help unite families and the community whose lives have been affected by the death of a baby or young child,” Northern Cemeteries Chief Executive Officer Pauline Tritton said. “We hope it will help comfort those present and help them remember their beautiful children.

Elanora Players Spring 2017 Production

‘The Actress’ by Peter Quilter
9 Performances from 29 September to 7 October
A funny and poignant comedy, The Actress dramatises the events backstage as a colourful, complicated actress Lydia Martin makes her emotional farewell performance, while dealing with the unexpected arrival of her provocative ex-husband.  Various people from her life invade her dressing room to say their goodbyes, declare their love, roar with laughter, spit insults, grab a final embrace, and renew old battles.

There’s a very interesting play within a play. Lydia is retiring with her last role as Lubov in Anton Chekhov’s ‘The Cherry Orchard.’ Audiences are treated to three excerpts from Chekhov’s play as seen from backstage.

To quote Quilter, “I think it’s a very funny play, so I really want audiences to come and laugh. But it’s also romantic and bittersweet, and I hope that audiences will enjoy it as a character study of Lydia and the men in her life.”

The challenging role of Lydia is played by Vicki Castorina whose most recent appearance with EP was as Marge in the January production of “Hotel Sorrento”.  Audiences will recognise Jan Adamson (Katherine), Sue Whittaker (Harriet) and Robert Longley (Charles) from roles in earlier 2017 Players’ productions. Gillian Cooper, in her first role with EP as Lydia’s daughter Nicole, brings experience and a bright young talent to the stage.

The season opens at the Elanora Heights Community Centre, 49a Kalang Rd, Elanora Heights at 8pm on Friday 29 September. Other performances are at 8pm on 30 September, 5,6 & 7 October, at 3pm on 30 September, 1 & 7 October, and at 11am on 1 October.

Cast from L to R: JAN ADAMSON , VICKI CASTORINA, ROBERT LONGLEY, SUE WHITAKER

Avalon Beach Carnival November 18th 1956

I was one of the Warriewood SLSC members attending the carnival. We saw the making of surfing history that day with the Americans. After the competition was over late in the afternoon, the Americans took out their boards and their bodyboards. The waves were quite big and they simply zipped across them, leaving all of us with gaping mouths. A long board guy, Windshuttle, tried to show that the long, hollow board was just as good. It wasn’t.  He caught the wave in the old traditional style and came off.

The show that the Americans put on that afternoon was amazing. One of them was Tommy Zhan from Santa Monica, California who later starred in a couple of films.

Tom Zahn who was the Hawaiian Board Champion - photo taken in 1956 at the carnival, courtesy Don Henderson, Freshwater SLSC via Surf Research

Sydney took to the new boards, with Northern Beaches, Gordon Woods making them from moulded ply (beautiful craftmanship) and a bit later, Roger Keiran making them from foam blanks. My brother and I bought one of the first Wood’s boards.

I now live in NZ but still think of that memorable day at Avalon.

Addendum: we immediately contacted Norman of course and he agreed to talk to us regarding that day and early days at Warriewood SLSC - he rang the magazine this week and his Profile runs Sunday October 15th, Issue 333.

Which grants us the opportunity, again, to thank all who allow us to speak to them and make a record of their experiences past and present in Pittwater, to create a great record made from many voices and views.
Thank you!

Reminder To Prepare For Bushfire Season

September 2017
Member for Pittwater Rob Stokes is encouraging all residents to prepare for the summer bushfire season.

After the driest winter in 15 years, NSW faces very challenging conditions this summer. There are a number of simple steps property owners in potentially vulnerable areas can take. These include:
  •  Trimming overhanging trees and shrubs;
  • Mowing your lawn and removing all the cut grass;
  • Removing flammable materials from around your home (e.g. door mats, wood piles, mulch, leaves, paint, outdoor furniture);
  • Clearing and removing debris and leaves from gutters;
  • Ensuring you have a hose or hoses that can cover the perimeter of your home;
  • Have a conversation with everyone in your home about what exactly they will do in the event of a bushfire.
You can download a Bushfire Survival Plan athttps://www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/resources/bush-fire-survival-plan.

Healthy Life Launches New-Look Store And Wellness Hub

Australia’s largest health and wellness retailer Healthy Life is entering an exciting phase of revitalisation with its latest store, on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, becoming the first to roll out the company’s fresh look and enhanced wellness offering.

Reaffirming the company’s place as a leading health and wellness retailer and continuing its role as a pioneer in the health space as it prepares to enter its 50th year, the newly-opened premises at Glenrose Shopping Village, Belrose, has become the first to offer a Wellness Hub as part of Healthy Life’s new retail store concept.

The Hub will offer regular, free, interactive presentations hosted by the company’s qualified practitioners, partners and suppliers. As the experts in natural health solutions, two-thirds of Healthy Life staff currently hold or are studying a health-related tertiary qualification.

“As part of our aspiration to become the most loved wellness destination in Australia, we want Healthy Life to be the place where the health conversation starts for people wanting to look and feel better – the natural way,” said Healthy Life Managing Director, Rolf Krecklenberg.

Harbour Trust Invites Volunteers To Join The Team At North Head Sanctuary

Wednesday, 20 September 2017
The Sydney Harbour Federation Trust is inviting local residents to join the team of volunteers who help restore, enrich and share North Head Sanctuary by joining the Harbour Trust’s volunteer team, and is currently recruiting for Visitor centre, tour guide and restoration volunteers.
North Head Sanctuary comprises more than 80 buildings set in 72 hectares of natural bushland, and is uniquely managed by the Harbour Trust in recognition of its precious natural and environmental values.

“The Harbour Trust is supported by an incredible team of 250 volunteers who play an essential role in the work of the Harbour Trust and across our sites,” said Harbour Trust CEO, Mary Darwell. “Last financial year our volunteers contributed more than 29,000 hours of support,” she said.

“Volunteering at the Harbour Trust is a rewarding experience, providing the opportunity to work at extraordinary sites, such as North Head Sanctuary,” said Ms Darwell.

The Harbour Trust invites new volunteers to join at any time across all of its sites, and is currently seeking volunteers for the following roles at North Head Sanctuary:

North Head Sanctuary – Visitor Centre Volunteer: Based at the North Head Sanctuary Visitor Centre at North Fort, volunteers meet and greet visitors and help them to maximise their visit by assisting with historic information, directions, tours and attractions. The role particularly suits a people-person with an interest in the environmental or historic elements of the site. The visitor centre is open daily with a fortnightly or weekly commitment required from each volunteer. Volunteers are currently needed for Saturdays and Sundays.

North Head Sanctuary (North Fort) Tour Guide: Tour guides lead groups of up to 25 people through the military heritage of North Fort at North Head Sanctuary. The site has played an important role in the defence of Sydney and the still includes military infrastructure including gun emplacements and underground tunnels, accessed through tours only. Tours run every Sunday year round, and Saturdays during summer. Volunteer guides need to have some guiding experience, an interest in military history, be comfortable presenting to groups and an interest in sharing the history of this site with visitors.

North Head Restoration Volunteer: Restoration volunteers are currently restoring the military heritage of the North Fort site at North Head Sanctuary including underground WWII tunnels and gun emplacements. Future projects include the underground plotting room and observation posts. Engineering and trade skills including carpentry, fitting and turning are highly regarded but not essential. The team meets each Tuesday and Wednesdays. Volunteers must provide their own steel caped boots. Workshop facilities, tools and equipment are all provided. A Site Induction Certificate (white card) is essential and the training is provided.

Harbour Trust Volunteers all work within their own teams and are trained in their role, and also become part of the 250 strong Harbour Trust volunteer team, are given a uniform and enjoy social opportunities, information sessions and other benefits. The role would particularly suit a local to the area.

To apply visit http://www.harbourtrust.gov.au/webform/apply or for more information contact the Harbour Trust Volunteer Manager on 8969 2112.

Harbour Trust Invites Community Feedback On Interpretation Strategy For Headland Park

Wednesday, 20 September 2017: Harbour Trust
The Harbour Trust is inviting the community and stakeholders to help share the rich history of Headland Park by providing feedback on its draft Interpretation Strategy for Headland Park. The Strategy aims to draw out various aspects of the site’s rich history and guide the addition of interpretative elements across the precinct that share this history.

Headland Park is one of Sydney’s most striking urban parklands with incorporating the former military sites at Chowder Bay, Georges Heights and Middle Head and connecting with Sydney Harbour National Park and Mosman Council reserves. It also has a rich Indigenous history. The urban parkland was first opened to the public in 2003 and has since become a thriving business park with a mix of commercial tenants, boutique cafes and art studios, and incorporates spectacular views of the harbour, bush tracks and recreation facilities.

“The Harbour Trust is developing an Interpretation Strategy to build on the existing heritage interpretation and further share the stories of the site’s Indigenous, military and submariner history as well as its modern history as an urban parkland,” said Harbour Trust CEO, Mary Darwell.

“It is expected the Strategy will result in the addition of interpretative items across the precinct using modern interpretive methods, resulting in a more engaging visitor experience and allowing the important historical threads of the site to be shared and remembered.

“In order to develop the draft Strategy, the Harbour Trust undertook workshops and online surveying with key stakeholders representing the site’s Indigenous and military history as well as community groups who are actively involved in the site.

“The contributions of these stakeholders has been vital in the development of the draft Plan, and I now encourage all members of the community to take this opportunity to join in the conversation and provide feedback on how this site’s intriguing history can be shared with everyone,” said Ms Darwell.

“We look forward to working closely with National Parks and Wildlife Services and Mosman Council in the delivery of the strategy,” she said.

The Interpretation Strategy will build on the existing military heritage interpretation of the site that includes the Hospital on the Hill interpretation trail and the History of Headland Park Interpretation Centre which tells the story of the Submarine Miners at Chowder Bay. Regular guided tours also take place every month taking visitors through the site’s underground tunnel and gun emplacements.

The plan will be on exhibition until 9 October, and available on www.harbourtrust.com.au . Printed copies are available to view at the Harbour Trust Office, Building 28 Best Ave, Mosman; Mosman Council, Civic Centre, Mosman Square; and Mosman Library, 605 Military Rd, Mosman.

Aboriginal Cultural Heritage In New South Wales: Public Consultation

The NSW Government is reforming the way Aboriginal cultural heritage is conserved and managed in New South Wales and is seeking your feedback to help refine the proposed new system. The public consultation is open from 11 September to 18 December 2017.

The first step involves changing the law for conserving and managing Aboriginal cultural heritage. This will form the cornerstone of a new legal framework that will, over time, also include new regulations, policies and guidelines.

After several years of consultation, we have developed a proposed new system for managing and conserving Aboriginal cultural heritage. For a 3-month period from September and October 2017, we will hold a series of information sessions and webinars to explain the new system. Following these information sessions, we will hold workshops on the draft legislation to establish the new system.

Where is the process up to?
Public feedback from a reform model released by the NSW Government in 2013 revealed general support for the principles of that model, but there were wide ranging and often contrasting views about detailed design elements. We have carefully considered this feedback and have developed a proposed new system.

What the proposed new system aims to do
The proposed new system aims to fulfil the NSW Government’s commitment to deliver stand-alone legislation that respects and conserves Aboriginal cultural heritage for current and future generations. Business Grants To Prepare For The NDIS

September 19, 2017: NSW Dept. of Family & Community Services, Economy
Businesses in the disability support sector can apply for grants of up to $2 million to expand their operations.

The Disability Sector Scale-Up (DSSU) program will help businesses that deliver disability support services to prepare for growth as the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) rolls out.

As well as business grants, the program will provide low-cost advisory services for small businesses through Business Connect to help them identify new opportunities that emerge from the NDIS.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Skills and Small Business John Barilaro said the rollout of the NDIS would improve choice and access to high-quality services for people with a disability.

“Critically this program will focus on strong service delivery in rural and remote areas,” Mr Barilaro said.

Minister for Disability Services Ray Williams said the DSSU was a component of the NSW Government’s Smart, Skilled & Hired initiative.

“In NSW the NDIS will provide support for up to 140,000 people and the NSW Government, through the DSSU program, is making sure we take full advantage of the scheme.”

Petition: Save Ingleside From Over-Development

PROPOSED INGLESIDE DEVELOPMENT
We the undersigned, write in connection with the above proposal and wish to object strongly and respectfully to the development of the area in the proposed manner.

Ingleside is a dispersed settlement where development proposals should be considered very carefully: infilling could ruin the character of the area but estate development will not only overwhelm it but also overwhelm the vast majority of residents living from Narrabeen to Palm Beach who will travel through or near Ingleside every day.

Naturally, we understand that the State Government has a determined growth strategy. However, the overwhelming increase in immediate population and thoroughfare traffic will have a devastating effect upon the existing population who live here and contribute to Sydney as a city and as a defined demographic already.

Pressure for the development in the region is considerable, mainly for housing city commuters, but has been successfully resisted for more than 30 years for the same reasons as now. The infrastructure was not in place and as can be seen by the impact of development in Warriewood, remains at an unsupportive level. The reasons for rejecting those schemes also included the inadequacy of the minor roads apart from Mona Vale Road to accommodate even small increases in traffic.

Reference is made to the over one thousand comments on the supporting website, mostly by residents of Pittwater external to the immediate area of Ingleside who have failed to have a voice but as your constituents have equal right to be represented as bearing the impact of the development.
With the above in mind, we request that the development be reviewed to take into account the residents of Pittwater, whom you represent. Rather than telling them why it will be good for them, consider the voice of the residents and understand why it will be bad for them.

June

AGE/SEX: 9 months / F

Northern Beaches Veterans And Community Day

When: Sunday 12th November 2017
Where: Dunbar Park Avalon Beach 10am – 4pm

The Inaugural Northern Beaches Veterans and Community Day will be held on 12 November 2017 in Dunbar Park Avalon Beach. This new event evolved due to the success of the Avalon Military Tattoo over the last 10 years, the enhanced relationship between local RSL sub-Branches and the community, and to carry on the legacy of past Avalon RSL Sub Branch President CDRE Graham Sloper AM RAN (Rtd).

Awareness of veteran’s issues is increasing within the community, and the ANZAC Spirit is flourishing on the Northern Beaches. Crowds at ceremonies have been increasing steadily in recent years. This will be an opportunity for the younger generations to learn more about past and current conflicts and to meet veterans and serving members of the Australian Defence Force.

Our mission is to instil a greater awareness and enduring compassion for veterans and the community in general.

Our objectives are:
• Highlight concerns for veterans and the community;
• Create an opportunity for interaction;
• Acknowledge service and sacrifice;
• Create harmony;
• Reflect on history;
• Enhance awareness of Defence career opportunities;
• Address veterans issues of reintegration into civilian society, homelessness and suicide;
• Profile veterans success stories

This will be a free of charge, non-profit event with participation on a voluntary basis. Any funds raised will be donated to Veterans Organisations and primarily the Veterans Centre Sydney Northern Beaches. There will be an emphasis on youth activities and careers. The primary market is the geographical area from Narrabeen to Palm Beach.

It is intended that local schools and community groups will have an arena to showcase their talents through music, drama and artwork with an Australian veterans theme. Over the coming months these groups will have the opportunity for input to shape the programme for the day. There will be a children’s art exhibition, a quilting display, ANZAC biscuit baking competition and many interactive displays and activities. Veterans Support Agencies are welcome to have a display and marquee in the park. There will be a stage with live music and performances throughout the day.

For further information, to book a stall or offer sponsorship, or VOLUNTEER to help, please contact the coordinators Lynn Murphy on 9883 9815 and Tamara Sloper Harding on 9883 9814 or emailsubbranch@avalonrsl.com.au.

2017 Mosman Art Prize

Saturday 23 September - Sunday 29 October
Mosman Art Gallery
REGISTRATION DAY - MONDAY 11 SEPTEMBER 2017
Registrations are open online now - click here to enter

Mosman Art Gallery is thrilled to announce that in 2017 the Mosman Art Prize will celebrate its 70th year!

Established in 1947, the Mosman Art Prize is Australia's oldest and most prestigious local government art award.  It was founded by the artist, architect and arts advocate, Alderman Allan Gamble, at a time when only a small handful of art prizes were in existence in Australia and the community had very little support and few opportunities to exhibit their work.

Over the past seventy years the Mosman Art Prize has developed in stature to become Australia’s most prestigious municipally funded art prize with a national profile. It regularly attracts over 900 entries annually and currently offers over $40,000 in prizes.

As an acquisitive art award for painting, the winning artworks collected since 1947 form a splendid collection of modern and contemporary Australian art, reflecting all the developments in Australian art practice since 1947.
The inaugural winner in 1947 was a young Margaret Olley. Since the prize has been won by scores of artists including Guy Warren, Grace Cossington Smith, Weaver Hawkins, Nancy Borlase, Lloyd Rees, Anthony Galbraith, Elisabeth Cummings, Tim Johnson, Guan Wei and Michael Zavros among many others. Past adjudicators also include notable Australian art figures such as Margaret Preston, John Olsen, Tim Storrier, Jenny Sages and Edmund Capon.
Now in its 70th year the Mosman Art Prize is more relevant than ever before and continues to sit at the centre of contemporary painting practice and is a not to be missed event on the nation's cultural agenda.
  • Mosman Art Prize (major acquisitive prize) sponsored by Mosman Council - $50,000
  • Allan Gamble Memorial Art Prize sponsored by Mosman Council - $3,000
  • Commendation Prize sponsored by Mosman Council - $2,000
  • Fourth Village Providore Emerging Artists’ Prize (under 35) - $2,000
  • Mosman Art Society Viewers' Choice Prize - $1,000

Hit The Road Jack – Sailing Royalty Farewells Its King

16 September 2017
The Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club, farewelled one of Pittwater & Sydney’s all-time great sailors and much loved Club Life Member, Jack Gale, on Thursday 14th September 2017.

With close to 400 people in attendance, including America’s Cup Skipper, James Spithill, Paralympian Colin Beashel and multiple Americas Cup & World Champions, stories of Jack’s colourful life were in abundance, reflected by all who spoke.
From his energy for the continuous modernisation of the Club and its facilities, to Tom Spithill’s recollection of their time together on the start boat and Jack’s astonishing sense of humour who never held back on speaking his mind. Tom said Jack was a great one for statistics, even in his last few weeks was always able to recall sail numbers, owners’ names, as well as an extensive knowledge of the history of boats, and even skippers and crew, who had sailed them.  Jack’s sons Robbie and Geoff spoke of their dad’s love of sailing and especially his love of the Club, and of course, his favourite drink – the Alfred’s Commodore’s Punch, which was available after the service for all to enjoy.

Having held many differing jobs at the Club, Jack became well known for his yacht race management, administrative skills, and pioneering the Barrenjoey Circle race course. He was well known for not only starting and finishing races but laying the days marks and getting back to the club to start pouring the taps for competitors thirst.

An avid sailor himself, he finished runner up in the 1964 Olympic trials aboard the 5.5 “Altair” and sailed onboard “Gretel II” in the 1977 Americas Cup challenger trials. Later radio commentating at the 1983 America’s Cup. He sailed many Montague Island races on a variety of boats, however, inshore one design racing was his first choice.

Jack was employed by the RPAYC from 1956 – 1989 and was made a Life Member of RPAYC in 1994 and in 2014 the Club’s training facility was named The Jack Gale Centre, in honour of Jack’s significant contributions to the Club and the sport of sailing on Pittwater.

In a fitting tribute to Jack's personality and character, the final song played at the closing of the service was Ray Charles’s - ‘Hit the Road Jack’.

Farewell Jack - fair winds & calm waters – you will be greatly missed and remembered for sharing your generosity of spirit, knowledge and wicked sense of humour.

Reminder To Prepare For Bushfire Season

13 September 2017
Member for Pittwater Rob Stokes is encouraging all residents to prepare for the summer bushfire season.

After the driest winter in 15 years, NSW faces very challenging conditions this summer. There are a number of simple steps property owners in potentially vulnerable areas can take. These include:
  •  Trimming overhanging trees and shrubs;
  • Mowing your lawn and removing all the cut grass;
  • Removing flammable materials from around your home (e.g. door mats, wood piles, mulch, leaves, paint, outdoor furniture);
  • Clearing and removing debris and leaves from gutters;
  • Ensuring you have a hose or hoses that can cover the perimeter of your home;
  • Have a conversation with everyone in your home about what exactly they will do in the event of a bushfire.
On the 16th and 17th of September, the NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) will host Get Ready Weekend.

Residents can visit their local brigade to pick up vital fire safety information and thank our outstanding volunteer firefighters.

“With so little rain over winter many Pittwater properties and backyards are very dry,” Rob Stokes said today.

“We are fortunate to be protected by fantastic volunteer firefighters - but we all must play our part in being responsible and reducing the fire risk in our community.

“Bushfire embers can travel many kilometres in the air, so taking simple steps now can make a crucial difference in the event of a nearby fire,” Rob Stokes said.

Local brigade events being held this weekend include:

• Terrey Hills RFS – Terrey Hills Fire Station, 10:00am-3:00pm, 16 Sept
• Scotland Island RFS – Scotland Island Fire Station, 10:00am- 4:00pm, 17 Sept
• Coal & Candle RFS – Dunbar Reserve Avalon Beach, 10:00am-3:00pm, 16 Sept
•  Mackerel Beach RFS – Bunnings Warehouse Narrabeen, 8:00am-4:00pm, 16 Sept
•  Duffys Forest RFS – Bunnings Warehouse Belrose, 9:00am-4:00pm, 16 and 17 Sept
•         West Pittwater RFS – Bunnings Warehouse Balgowlah, 8:00am-4:00pm, 17 Sept

NSW Stars Named In Strong Aussie Squad

Tuesday, September 12th, 2017
By SLS NSW
The state’s top surf sport athletes continue to earn national recognition with six NSW based athletes named in the Australian team that will contest the International Surf Rescue Challenge later this year.

Newport trio Georgia Miller, Jake Lynch, and Blake Drysdale will be joined on tour by Kendrick Louis (Manly), and young-guns Jemma Smith (Umina) and Lizzie Welborn (North Bondi) in what is shaping up to be a very competitive Australian side.

The team was confirmed by Surf Life Saving Australia last week with a host of familiar names joining the NSW contingent in a squad that boasts plenty of experience on the international stage.

“I would like to congratulate all our NSW based athletes on their selection for the International Surf Rescue Challenge,” said Surf Sport Manager Rob Pidgeon.

“It’s an honour to be selected in any representative side, but to wear the colours of your country is obviously the pinnacle of an athlete’s career. To have so many members from our state highlights the incredible depth at the moment.

“I am sure that all those selected will do credit to themselves and to their clubs when they take to the surf or the beach later this year,” Mr Pidgeon concluded.

The DHL International Surf Rescue Challenge will feature three tests held on the 30th of November and 2nd-3rd of December 2017 in Mount Maunganui, New Zealand, and will be contested by Youth and Open competitors.

Events in the Surf and Beach disciplines will be contested with the competition considered a vital part of preparations for next year’s World Lifesaving Champions that will be held in South Australia.

• Highlight concerns for veterans and the community;
• Create an opportunity for interaction;
• Acknowledge service and sacrifice;
• Create harmony;
• Reflect on history;
• Enhance awareness of Defence career opportunities;
• Address veterans issues of reintegration into civilian society, homelessness and suicide;

Board Riders Prepare For State Champs

Thursday 7 September 2017
From Surf Life Saving NSW
Lifesaving’s best surf board riders will swap patrol uniforms for wetsuits when they take to Birubi Point’s famous break for their shot at glory when the 2017 Surf Life Saving State Board Riding Championships get underway tomorrow.

Over 100 competitors from Cudgen Headland in Northern NSW through to Kiama Downs on the NSW will be making the journey to the picturesque Port Stephens beach with competitors looking to make the most of a bright start to spring as they show off their skills in the surf.

Prior to 2015, the NSW Board Riding State Championships were incorporated as part of the annual State Championships, but in an effort to allow more athletes to enter it was decided a stand-alone-competition was required.

After being staged on the Central Coast for the last two seasons, the State Championships moves north to the scenic waters of Port Stephens.

Port Stephens Councils Tourism and Events Coordinator, Janelle Gardner said events like this are "a great opportunity for Port Stephens to showcase our amazing beaches to very large audience. The NSW Board Riding State Champs also highlight Port Stephens Councils support of surf lifesaving across Port Stephens.

"As a coastal destination, our Surf Life Saving Clubs play a huge role in our community and this event will provide a really good chance for our residents and visitors to head on down to the beach, show their support for our clubs and check out the talents of some of our local lifeguards this weekend,” Ms Gardner added.

The championships are open to athletes aged 13 to over 70 with competition to be conducted in a format of 20 minute heats followed by semi and finals as required.

In a boost for the sport in NSW 44 clubs will fly their colours throughout the three-day competition with North Bondi making up the largest contingent sending a squad of 10 athletes to the start-line.

NSW Surf Sports Coordinator Luke Stigter is looking forward to a pulsating and enjoyable event.

“It’s an exciting opportunity for our lifesavers to show off their surfing skills, and I know they’re all looking forward to it. There’s a buzz around all types of surfing at the moment with the inclusion of the sport in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics,” Mr Stigter said.

“Birubi Point has proved in the past as very competent hosts of surf sport competition such as the IRB Premiership Series.

“I’m sure the competition will be conducted in the right spirits and we’re very much looking forward to hitting the surf at on Friday,” he concluded.

With the swell playing such a vital role in the competition all eyes will be on the forecast with plenty of fingers crossed for some pumping waves.

The NSW Board Riding Championships will be held from Friday September 8 through to Sunday 10 September 2017 at Birubi Point. Competition on the opening day begins from 7:30am AEST

Congratulations

Palm Beach SLSC and Avalon Beach SLSC member Adriaan van der Wallen has done excellently at the NSW State SLSC Surfing Titles; Silver in the Open Longboard against Harries (Bondi Rescue), Silver in the Masters Shortboard and Gold in Masters Longboard.

Avalon Beach SLSC Grant Salmon Bronze in Masters Longboard.

Avalon Beach Historical Society 2017 AGM

The next meeting of the Avalon Beach Historical Society will be held onTuesday, 12 SeptemberAs usual it will be held in the Avalon Beach Bowling Club in Bowling Green Lane and will start at 8pm.

Although it will be our AGM most of you will be aware that the Election of Office Bearers takes up little time and this will leave plenty of time for our guest speaker’s presentation.

JOHN SIMPSON and his wife Nita arrived in the area in 1953 from Five Dock. They bought a block of land in Bilkurra Avenue from J.T.Stapleton for 240 pounds, when Plateau Road beyond its intersection with The Outlook was dirt.

As well as being a licensed plumber, John bought and ran the hardware store in Old Barrenjoey Road for 11 years (Beach General occupy the site nowadays).

John, along with the Feehely brothers Barry and Keith, began the Avalon Beach Junior Surf Club which later became the Nippers. He was also involved with the early Avalon Bulldogs Rugby League Club as a coach of the 10-11 year olds and was assistant coach of the Avalon Public School rugby league team.

John has a great memory and with such early involvement in Avalon Beach this is another evening you will not want to miss. Of course we will have some photos up on the big screen to illustrate John’s talk.

Member Roger Sayers will give an update on our further endeavours of tracing Governor Phillip’s initial movements in Pittwater. Our first document, which dealt with his first day/night in Pittwater on West Head Beach has been accepted for publication in the Royal Australian Historical Society’s September journal. Our second document concerns his movements on day 2 southward along to the cove on the east side of Pittwater.

I learnt after our June meeting that one of our members had been awarded an OAM (Order of Australia) in the General Division.

Jim Nicol received the award for his service to the Royal Botanic Gardens as a volunteer since 1997, including several years as Head Guide. Congratulations from us all!

We also have some fabulous news concerning our exhibition next June and some beaut photos showing what we lost and what’s left after the loss of our beloved Indian Head from the North Avalon headland.

Membership fees are due at this meeting so it would be appreciated if you could arrive that little bit earlier so that the evening can still start on time.

Please note, according to our records your membership was last paid on 22.3.16 and is current to 2016.  It would be greatly appreciated if you could bring your membership up to date.  Thank you to those that have already done so.

As always, guests of members are welcome and to stay for supper afterwards.

Have you ever wanted to hang out with the devilishly mischievous Real Housewives of Sydney stars - Lisa Oldfield and Athena Levendi?

Have you ever had a hankering to listen to the spellbinding voice of award-winning soprano, Phoebe Humphreys, of Opera Australia whilst sipping on a Lemon Lime and ‘Critters’?

Or wished for the opportunity to bid on a dinner cooked by the one-and-only David Oldfield who has trained under world-renowned chef, Marco Pierre White?

Or dreamt of being the winning bidder of a one-of-a-kind skateboard signed and painted by Johnny Depp?

Well, if any or all of this sounds like a truly spectacular and exciting evening, don’t miss out on your chance to buy a ticket to the Go Wild Gala - hosted by Sydney Wildlife and MC’d by Channel 7’s Sydney director of news, Jason Morrison!

Why are all these amazing celebrities helping Sydney Wildlife?
Well, we are frantically raising funds to buy and custom-fit a van which will become a Mobile Clinic for treating injured, sick and orphaned wildlife.
The van will be stationed in different parts of Sydney every week to assist with wildlife in distress.

It may also be deployed to areas affected by natural disasters such as bushfires, floods and soaring temperatures causing heat-stress events.

The van will be staffed by veterinarians who offer to volunteer their time to help our wildlife. It may be a wonderful training centre for our veterinary students and a huge asset to our community.

All these wonderful celebrities believe in our pioneering vision and are willing to donate their time and celebrity status to bring our vision to life.

What is Sydney Wildlife?
We are a 100% volunteer-run organisation dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating and releasing any sick, injured or orphaned Australian native wildlife.
We receive no Government funding and we need YOU to help us!

Why do our wildlife need help?

The biggest danger our wildlife face is a lack of interest in their welfare.
In addition - habitat loss, vehicle strike, disease, predation and injury from introduced species, dealing with man-made obstacles such as netting, litter and fences and natural disasters are among the many perils they face daily.

How far are we with our goal?

The cost of the van, the custom fit-out, the medical equipment and medications needed to get the Mobile Clinic on the road we estimate to be around the $200K mark.
So far we have raised $72K.

Yes, it’s an ambitious project.
Yes, it’s a pioneering project.
Yes’ it’s a first.

But, in the wise words of veterinarian Dr Karin Lourens:
“There is a first for everything.
Sometimes it’s the only way to make history.”

Pittwater House Student Finalist In NSW International Student Awards

8 September 2017
Pittwater House Year 10 student, Tanya Da Costa, has been selected as a finalist for the 2017 NSW International Student Awards for her outstanding community and school based work.

Not only is Tanya actively fundraising for a high school to be built in her hometown of Soibada in Timor Leste, she is also active in Northern Beaches council workshops, the Duke of Edinburgh scheme and anti-bullying and suicide prevention projects.  She speaks publicly for the local Rotary club, as well as at church and at local primary schools. She has also spoken at her school, Pittwater House, to increase her peer group's awareness of Timor Leste and those less fortunate.

The NSW International Student Awards celebrate outstanding contributions made by international students to communities in NSW and acknowledge the organisations that support international students with community programs and initiatives.

Tanya is one of three finalists within the NSW International Student Awards School’s category. The announcement was made yesterday by Niall Blair, Minister for Primary Industries, Minister for Regional Water, and Minister for Trade and Industry.

Pittwater House School Principal, Dr Nancy Hillier, said, “We are extremely proud of Tanya and are delighted she has been recognised in this way. In the time she has been at Pittwater House School she has shown enormous strength of character and is proactively involved in a wide variety of community initiatives”.

Dr Hillier said community service was a critical element of the Pittwater House Education.

“The School’s Skills and Service Program provides opportunities for every student to work on projects to support a vast array of community programs”.

Winners of the awards will be announced at an invitation-only ceremony on Friday 22 September 2017 at Government House in Sydney. The ceremony will be hosted by His Excellency General, David Hurley AC DSC (Ret'd), Governor of New South Wales, at Government.

Energy Bill Relief Package For Households And Small Business

Sunday September 3rd, 2017: NSW Premier, The Hon. Gladys Berejiklian
NSW households struggling with increasing power prices could save hundreds of dollars a year off their energy bills through discounts on energy efficient appliances, rebates will increase by 20 per cent, and small businesses could save up to $1,900 a year under the nation’s most comprehensive energy relief package announced today by NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian.

In addition, energy rebates for concession cardholders will increase by $50 per year to $285 and rebates for other eligible households will increase by $30 per year to $180, helping about 900,000 households doing it tough.

Around 10,000 small businesses will also be able to access discounts to upgrade inefficient equipment, which could lead to bill savings of up to $1,900 per year.

“We understand rising energy costs are putting pressure on people. This is a national issue but the NSW Government is strongly committed to doing what it can to help,” Ms Berejiklian said.

The energy affordability package includes:
  • The Low Income Household rebate increased from $235 to $285 and the Family Energy Rebate increased from $150 to $180 to help around 900,000 customers struggling to pay their bill.
  • Discounts on equipment upgrades for small business to save each business up to $1900 on their yearly bill.
  • Discounts for energy efficient lighting and air conditioning upgrades for all households that could lead to bill savings of up to $500 per household per year.
  • Discounts for up to 23,000 concession cardholders to save up to 50 per cent on the cost of upgrading old fridges and TVs to energy saving models, saving each household an average of around $200 a year.
  • An end to unnecessary charges from retailers such as fees for paper bills
  • Penalties for retailers who don’t move rebate recipients to a better deal
  • Energy saving upgrades for up to 16,500 public housing clients to assist the state’s most vulnerable, with participating households to save an average of around $360 per year on their bills.
As an example, a household could receive a discount of about $200 for an energy efficient air conditioner to replace an older heater to save them about $225 a year on their bill.

A café owner could receive a $400 discount on replacing an old refrigeration system with a new energy efficient cool room which, combined with other measures, could lead to bill savings of up to $1900 per year.

Energy and Utilities Minister Don Harwin said all energy rebates will increase by 20 per cent and energy retailers will be forced to scrap early termination fees, paper bill fees and fees for paying over the counter at Australia Post.

“These changes will protect and empower energy consumers who deserve a fair go, and it’ll make the retailers step up too,” Mr Harwin said.

“Our existing vulnerable household appliance program has already helped 17,600 households slash their bills by up to $200 a year, meaning we are helping the environment while helping consumers,” Environment Minister Gabrielle Upton said.

The discount figures will be finalised after the program goes through the tender process and the amount each household and business will save will depend on the number of upgrades they choose to install and their power usage.

• Highlight concerns for veterans and the community;
• Create an opportunity for interaction;
• Acknowledge service and sacrifice;
• Create harmony;
• Reflect on history;
• Enhance awareness of Defence career opportunities;
• Address veterans issues of reintegration into civilian society, homelessness and suicide;

Profile: Sally Mayman and Dale Kentwell

Two local creatives have recently completed an odyssey of exploration and empowering others while being gifted with meeting wonderful people in a beautiful place. Out of this work this two ladies, both already mothers, have given birth to another child - the book released on September 1st, 2017 - Seeing Saltwater Country.

The Seeing Saltwater Country project began in 2009 when artists Sally Mayman and Dale Kentwell collaborated with the local indigenous peoples of the Dampier Peninsula, Western Australia. The resultant exhibition of both photographs and painting explores connection to country highlighting a unique Saltwater lifestyle. The initial collaborations were at the time of the proposed gas hub at James Price point.

The exhibition was first shown at Manly Regional Gallery and Museum in 2010 as part of the Local Guringai Festival and has recently been acquired by the State Library of Western Australia for their permanent collection with a publishing contract through Fremantle Press.

You can meet Dale and Sally at Berkelouw Books on September 21st - details in their page. As are where you can get your hands on this book.
This week an insight into where these ladies came from and where they're going to through this great work.

History:  Early Pittwater Surfers – Palm Beach I: Alrema Becke Queen of Palm Beach - daughter of George Lewis Becke, famous South Seas trader and writer 'Louis Becke', who possibly surfed in Samoa, in 1908, before surfing here. Known as the best woman surfer in the state, then the Champion of Woman surfers in Australia, this lady organised numerous events to fund Palm Beach SLSC - so much so that they honoured her works

Artist of the Month:  September 2017: Seeing Saltwater Country - by Sally Mayman and Dale Kentwell

Sally Mayman has been a photographer since the 1980s, working professionally in London and Australia. Sally has specialised in photographing people and landscapes, with many clients from corporate, editorial and government organisations. Dale Kentwell has been a practising artist since the 1980s and works across different media. She completed an art certificate at TAFE NSW and a BA and MA in visual arts at UNSW Art and Design. She has studied bush regeneration and bush land management and continues to work in this field.

This book will appeal to people interested in art and photography and to those wanting to learn more about Aboriginal cultures and communities. It will also appeal to tourists visiting Australia’s popular Kimberley region.

Fight For Pittwater Continues As Voters Go To The Polls

Former councillors opposed to Pittwater's amalgamation are carrying on the fight to recover it this week as residents go to the polls.

Protect Pittwater President Bob Grace and his colleague from Pittwater Council, Sue Young, have been attending pre-polling at Mona Vale everyday this week, collecting signatures on the group's petition to have Pittwater re-constituted in its original boundaries.

Sue and Tony Young who, along with many other concerned residents, have seriously committed to gaining signatures for a petition to parliament.

Mr Grace said the fight for Pittwater will continue and residents should not lose heart as the council election goes ahead.

“We want to leave the state government and our local MP Rob Stokes in no doubt that residents want Pittwater Council back - even as they are forced to go to the polls,” Mr Grace said.

“Eighty-nine per cent of Pittwater residents did not want to be part of Northern Beaches Council and we are giving them the chance to vote for Pittwater on election day by signing the proposal to recover our council.

“We will continue to fight for our council.”

Mr Grace said to look out for the Protect Pittwater corflute at pre-polling and on polling day – September 9 - in Mona Vale to find Ms Young or him with the petition.

Under the Local Government Act, the Local Government Minister is required to refer the amalgamation to an inquiry if the petition is presented to her has 250 or more signatures. Protect Pittwater already has over 1,000.

Those gathering the signatures have stated there have been ‘very few refusals actually. People want their council back!’

Mr Grace did not rule out court action to recover the council and noted that a bill for plebiscites on demergers in amalgamated areas is due to go to the NSW parliament's Upper House in the week following the election.

"We are currently still seeking further legal advice and will need more monetary contributions from the people of Pittwater.

We can still win this fight." Mr. Grace said in closing.

2017 3 Way Fishing Comp

Next Sunday, September 10th, The Newport, Avalon and Narrabeen Fishing Clubs will hold their annual 3 Way Comp in and around Pittwater.

The weigh-in, hosted this year by Newport, has been shifted to the Newport Bowling where friends, family and supporters will gather to see who holds the shield aloft this year.

God luck to all fishers, young, mature and in between - may the winds and tides bring you lots of fishy bounty!

Hazard Reduction; McLean Street, Ingleside

courtesy - Tumbledown Dick Bush Fire Brigade
Some photos of our members at last weekends hazard reduction where we had both tankers operational and also some preparatory work on another large HR to the north end of Tumble valley. This weekend we had a tanker at an HR in Cumberland.

Over the past few weeks our district has been inundated with incidents from the truck fire, numerous bush fires, a structure fire and storm damage to name a few.

On Saturday alone there were members of the district standing waist deep in the waters of Dee Why Lagoon fighting a bush fire that was burning anything that was dry. That night they were stopping spot fires caused by the Oxford Falls structure fire. Our members put the trucks away after their return, went home to bed at 2am only to have the pagers go off again for the Oval fire.

Sunday those members came out again to conduct hazard reductions and then sent out to the Oxford Falls area to stop another bush fire. As well as another call to deal with the Oval.

All these members are volunteers with careers and family outside the RFS, who do this to protect their communities.

We don't do this for thanks or recognition, we just do it because we want to.
The RFS has no specific recruitment for either gender. If you can do the job, want to do the job, you can join.

Misleading B-Line Rumours Are Unhelpful

31 August 2017
Member for Pittwater Rob Stokes today expressed disappointment at the misinformation being spread regarding the proposed extension of the B-Line bus service to Newport.

The bizarre rumours being circulated throughout the community are inaccurate and counterproductive.

To be very clear:
  • No ‘bus terminals’ or ‘bus depots’ will be built in the Newport Beach Car Park
  • No ‘B-Line toilet blocks’ will be built in the Newport Beach Car Park
  • No multi-storey car parks will be built in the Newport Beach Car Park
  • No dedicated ‘B-Line lanes’ will be introduced through the Newport shopping precinct
  • No B-Line buses will be directed down Coles Parade, Foamcrest Avenue, Seaview Avenue, Ross Street or Bramley Avenue (or any other residential side street).
  • The iconic boulevard of Norfolk Pines through Newport will notbe removed
“This type of scaremongering doesn’t help anyone”, Rob Stokes said today.

“Spreading misleading rumours simply deprives the community of the opportunity to have a genuine discussion about improved public transport services.

“It’s the oldest trick in the protest handbook – come up with a list of frightening rumours and use these to hijack discussion.

“Every person that catches a bus is potentially one less car on our local roads.

“The only thing we’re looking at adding is improved public transport services and the only thing we’re looking at removing is traffic congestion.

“For the first time in decades, funding is available to introduce public transport improvements in our community. These opportunities don’t come along very often.

“Transport for NSW has consistently and repeatedly said it wants to work with the community on a suitable proposal before progressing. This is a position I strongly support,” Rob Stokes said.

Vale William Wallace

Former Brookvale and Noosa surfboard shaper and surfer Bill Wallace has died at 91.

William Wallace was one of the 'Brookvale Six' who featured in Phil Jarratt's 2016 Men of Wood and Foam film on early pioneers of Australian surf board design and construction. He moved to Noosa in the 1970s. The pioneer was still being asked to make boards to the original designs used in surfing's early days of development during the 1940s, 50s and 60s when he was well into his 80's..

A paddle out in honour of of Bill took place on Main Beach yesterday, Saturday September 2nd.

In 1948 Bill Wallace was sweep of the Bronte SLSC boat. In 1955 he began producing hollow timber boards, 'Toothpicks'.In December 1963 he moved to 8 Winbourne Road Brookvale.

Surfboard wrecked
A BEACH inspector was slightly hurt yesterday when his surfboard was smashed by a 20ft wave at Bronte. The inspector, Bill Wallace, 25, clung to part of the wreckage until he was washed 300 yards to the shore. He was cut on the head by a splinter of the smashed board. Wallace was using the surfboard, which was 16ft, for the first time since it was damaged in March, when he competed in the surf championships. Surfboard wrecked (1952, September 14). The Sun (Sydney, NSW : 1910 - 1954), p. 9. Local Government Election

Below runs information sent in by candidates for the September 9th Local Government Election. All Material recieved is unedited and uninterpreted.

Nothing has been sent in by the Northern Beaches Community Alliance candidates standing in the Pittwater Ward but they have a Facebook page here where information has been posted.

Nothing has been sent in by Labour Party candidates in either Narrabeen or Pittwater Wards but they too have a Facebook page here where information has been posted.

Where Am I (which Ward) and Where and How to Vote
We have had requests for information as to what ward people may be in due to the recent excise of parts of Pittwater into a Narrabeen Ward and the recent excise of parts of Warringah into a Pittwater Ward.

For those living in Warriewood, Ingleside, Elanora Heights and North Narrabeen you are in the Narrabeen Ward. See map below.

For those living in Duffy's Forest - welcome to Pittwater!

WHERE to Vote
You must vote at a polling place in your council area. (If your council area is divided into wards, you must vote at a polling place within your ward).
Details of polling places
 are here - just click on the ward you are now in and details of where polling booths are will be displayed.

HOW to fill out the Ballot paper

The paper itself clearly tells you how to vote. If you have problems, or make a mistake, speak to those working at these elections and they shall help you.

Electing 2 or more councillors
The form the ballot paper takes will depend on whether candidates are running as individuals or in groups. In either case, you must show enough choices to equal half the number of councillors to be elected.

Grouped candidates
If candidates have formed groups, and 2 or more groups have requested group voting squares, the ballot paper will have a thick line running across it, with squares above the line and below the line. The squares above the line represent the group of candidates listed below the line.

There are 2 ways you can fill this ballot paper in. You can vote for a group by filling in squares above the line, known as voting above the line,or you can vote for individual candidates by filling in squares below the line.

Above the line voting
If you choose to vote above the line, you must put a number ‘1’ in one of the squares above the line. By doing this you are voting for that whole group of candidates in the descending order they are listed below that square. That is all you have to do.

But if you want, you can show your second choice of group and more choices if you want, by putting a number ‘2’, then ‘3’ and so on in the squares above the line.
If you vote this way, you do not put numbers in any squares below the line.

Below the line voting
If you do not want to vote for a whole group but for individual candidates in any order, you may choose to vote below the line.
To vote, you must put a number ‘1’ in one of the squares below the lineand then put choices, starting with the number ‘2’, equal to half the number of councillors to be elected.
The directions on the ballot paper will tell you how many choices you must show. (For example, if there are 8 councillors to be elected, you must put the number 1, then 2, then 3 and then 4 in squares below the line, for your vote to be counted.)
You can then show more choices, after that, if you want.
If you vote this way, you do not put any numbers in any squares above the line.

Principality Of Pittwater

The wonderful Lorrie Morgan has bequeathed the patch below to us earlier this week and we would like to clarify where it came from - is it this?:

Peter Bensley has been dubbed Prince Peter of Pittwater by the Avalon Lions Club which has organised a Pittwater Principality Secession Week from September 25 to October 5 to raise funds for disabled and disadvantaged people in the Manly Waringah area. In return for his crown Peter will be handing out knighthoods and attending fund-raising functions beginning with a Royal Chinese Banquet.

Construction Update - Church Point Upgrade

Our contractor, Ward Civil, is continuing with the construction of the new roadway and car park at Church Point.

The new boardwalk and road realignment will be opened to the public on Monday 4 September, 2017.  It is important to note that a 40km/hr road work speed limit will be in place until the Car Park and final road works are completed early in 2018.

The new road alignment and temporary work zone set up for the next stage of works will result in reduced access to the Cargo Wharf for large trucks and no access for semi- trailers.

Users of the Cargo Wharf are also reminded of the following existing load restrictions on the Cargo Wharf:
  • Maximum  Vehicle Load of 8 tonne axle load
  • No vehicle access permitted to the east half of the wharf
  • Maximum Uniform Superimposed Load (Bulk Storage) of 0.5 tonnes per square metre
Further works in the area will continue from September to December 2017:
  • Carpark foundations
  • Service relocations for electricity and telecommunications
We thank the local community for their patience and understanding whilst we carry out these important and vitally needed improvements.
