SCAM ALERT: Fake Telstra refund emails

The ACMA has received hundreds of reports from Australians concerning Telstra refund emails.

These emails are a phishing scam designed to trick people into clicking links and giving away personal information.

Here is an example of one of the scam emails in circulation. The subject line is: 'Your Telstra bill for account 2000XXXXXXXXX is refunded'. The sender address was Telstraemailbill_noreply9(at)online.Telstra. com

The scammers have copied real information from Telstra and at first sight it looks legitimate. But there are also obvious signs it is a scam. Can you pick them?

Do not click on the links if you receive an email similar to this and never reply to a suspected phishing email.

CBD Bus Changes on the Way as Part of Plans for Better Transport

July 21st, 2015 - Changes have been announced by the NSW Government to the bus services in the CBD as part of its plans to improve public transport and road congestion, with SHOROC Mayors seeking to ensure quick and convenient connections for travellers to get across the CBD.

The Minister for Transport has announced the route design of the new bus network that will operate from October 4, to combat long-term bus congestion in the CBD and prepare for construction of Sydney’s new light rail line.

For travel to and from the northern beaches and Mosman, this means all buses will now start and terminate at Wynyard, including routes L88 and L90, E86-89, 178-180 and 244-247.

“The State Government is planning large changes for our public transport system including the planned Northern Beaches Bus Rapid Transit. These should provide significant improvements in travel around the city”, said SHOROC President and Mayor of Mosman Cr Peter Abelson.

“We understand there is a need to manage CBD congestion with the construction planned to provide a better transport system for the long term.”

“Some residents will need to adjust their travel arrangements and during this time it’s important to keep a focus on the future benefits we’ll all get from current construction.”

“We would also like to see that these CBD bus changes include quick and convenient connections for northern beaches and Mosman travellers across the CBD.”

“We will continue to work with the NSW Government to deliver better transport for our region.”

Getting the Northern Beaches BRT operational as fast as possible and better bus services from Dee Why to Chatswood must be a priority to provide that fast and more reliable public transport service our region needs.

The Minister for Transport has also announced he has commissioned a review of public transport fares, including the ease of changing between buses and trains, asking the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal to review integrated fares for Sydney.

Sailability NSW Crystal Bay nominated for the Volunteer of the Year Award for Best Team

Asubmission has been lodged for all those who dedicated their time to support Sailabilty Crystal Bay for Volunteer of the Year. Below is a little extract from the submission form.

Soon after Sailiabilty started in NSW, Pittwater also started a Sailabilty Branch. Sailing with people with disabilities, encouraged by the enthusiasm of Kay Cottee, Lynne Phillips and Doctor Phil Hardy. Thus grew an army of Volunteers, sometimes referred to as ‘Dad’s Army”- a misnomer, as there was a good mix of men and women keen to see the programme succeed. From this beginning hundreds have benefited from their efforts.

Both skilled sailors and volunteers who love the sport and provide support in many ways. Members provide people with disabilities to enjoy “freedom on the water” The aims now are focused on competitive racing which have been provided through the network provided by Sailabilty NSW.

With the physically disabled needed special equipment to access their boats and getting in and out of their boats many modifications are necessary. These have been provided and maintained by the volunteers.

 Carroll Brothers Set for 19th Annual Moloka’i-2-O’ahu - Sunday, July 26, 2015

Pittwater brothers Tom and Nick Carroll are racing again as one team in this year’s Moloka’i-2-O’ahu beginning Sunday morning Hawaiian time.

For nearly 20 years the Moloka’i-2-O’ahu Paddleboard World Championships (M2O), have crowned the world’s top athletes in the two disciplines of Stand Up (SUP) and prone paddleboarding. An international field of men and women annually come to the shores of Hawaii to test their strength and endurance against 32 miles of the world’s most powerful portions of open ocean – the Ka’iwi Channel, also known as the Molokai Channel. This year, M2O welcomes back a host of past champions and a new collection of rising stars on Sunday, July 26, 2015 as athletes from 16 countries try to plot the fastest course from the island of Moloka’i to O’ahu.

How to follow the race

Race fans can visit Molokai2Oahu.com/live for live updates from the Ka’iwi Channel, or watch for updates on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

The men’s solo paddleboard division will once again be an all-out Aussie slug fest, featuring three-time M2O champion Brad Gaul. The 36-year-old holds the second fastest time in race history of 4 hours, 43 minutes, 54 seconds. Race founder Mike Takahashi believes Gaul is back to take down the course record of 4:40:31 currently held by 10-time M2O champion Jamie Mitchell.

With the 2014 champion Matt Poole out of this year’s race due to injury, the door is wide open for young Rory Chapman, 25, to make a run at Gaul. Chapman’s respectable second-place finish last year (4:58:58) was just minutes behind Poole and solidified his role as a serious competitor for years to come.

The men’s field will be pushed by three other Australians who are taking their first crack at the infamous channel crossing. Matt Bevilacqua and Kendrick Louis,  Australian Ironmen competitors and professional water sport athlete. Cory Hill, 26, is the 2015 Maui Jim Molokai to Oahu Surfski champion, and Tanyn Lyndon, 22, is ranked just behind Bevilacqua in the Australian Ironman series, ranked 10th in the series. Newport SLSC's Fletcher Davies is also competing.

The women’s race will likely be guided by Australia’s Jordan Mercer, 21, who is paddling for her fifth consecutive M2O championship. In 2011, at the age of 17, the Australian Ironwoman pro and M2O record holder (5:22:31, 2011) was the youngest woman in race history to win the solo division at M2O. Mercer will be joined by the winningest woman in M2O history, Kanesa Duncan-Seraphin, 39. The eight-time champ established the first women’s course record (5:53:49, 2004) on a stock board, which stood the test of time for seven years before Mercer’s arrival. Duncan-Seraphin’s record still holds today as the fastest time in the women’s stock category.

Newcomer Maddy Dunn, 21, joins the women’s solo competition for the first time. She is currently eighth in the Australian Ironwoman series and one of the country’s top board paddlers.

About the Moloka’i-2-O’ahu Paddleboard World Championships, presented by Kona Longboard Island Lager

The 19th edition of the Moloka’i-2-O’ahu Paddleboard World Championships (M2O), presented by Kona Longboard Island Lager, is set for Sunday, July 26, 2015. Founded in 1997, M2O has grown from a grassroots challenge for the legendary lifeguards of O’ahu to the premiere event in the sport of paddleboarding. The race annually crowns world champions in the two disciplines of traditional (prone) and stand-up (SUP) paddleboarding. Connecting the islands of Moloka’i and O’ahu, the 32-mile race crosses the Ka’iwi Channel, also known as the Moloka’i Channel. Men and women from more than 20 countries will face strong currents as they navigate the fastest downwind-route over one of the most beautiful and powerful channels in the world. Top athletes can complete the crossing in less than five hours, riding mid-channel waves that crest more than 12 feet and carry paddlers hundreds of meters. M2O starts on Kaluakoi Beach on the northwest shore of Moloka’i and finishes in Maunalua Bay on the southeast shore of O’ahu. The annual race is a deeply personal experience, challenging every paddler’s physical and mental endurance. Every finisher experiences an individual championship.

Government Recall Issued for Affected Samsung Top Loader Washing Machines

23 July 2015 Minister responsible for Fair Trading Victor Dominello today announced a Government recall had been issued to Samsung regarding six top loader washing machine models.

The machines, of which more than 144,000 were sold nationally between 2010 and 2013, have been found to pose a fire risk.

Mr Dominello said consumers should be mindful of the potential dangers associated with the affected model machines.

“Don’t wait until it is too late. It is time for consumers to take action and check the model numbers of their Samsung top loader washing machines,” he said.

“If a consumer does have an affected machine, they should only use it if they are present or nearby to monitor it and contact Samsung to arrange a free inspection and repair. If a consumer notices any smoke or smell coming out of the machine, they should turn it off at the power point.”

While a voluntary recall has been in place since 2013, warning consumers of the dangers of the affected machines and providing a free in-home repair, both the NSW Government and Samsung remain concerned by the number of consumers that have not taken part in the recall to date.

To prevent further incidents occurring, it is essential that anyone who has one of these machines contact Samsung and organise to have it repaired.

Under the terms of the Government recall, Samsung will repair machines on-site in consumers’ homes. The reworked machines meet the safety requirements of Australian Standards and are independently certified following repair.

Under the Government recall, Samsung will also continue to provide significant reporting to Fair Trading about incidents, progress of repairs, and standard of technicians’ work. The company will continue its advertising and promotion campaign about the recall.

The move to a Government recall is a strong signal of the commitment to continuing efforts to get any affected machines repaired.

“The previous 'voluntary’ recall may have led some people to think it was optional to take part - far from it. Affected consumers need to take action and have their washing machine inspected and repaired,” Mr Dominello said.

Fifty-one percent of the affected models in NSW have already been inspected and fixed by Samsung as part of the voluntary recall; however, there are still incidents occurring involving machines that are yet to be inspected.

Machines that are yet to be inspected by Samsung pose a fire risk as moisture may penetrate electrical connectors within one area of the machine causing a fire hazard.

Model name and number details can be found on the back of the washing machine. Affected models are:

SW75V9WIP/XSA

SW65V9WIP/XSA

SW80SPWIP/XSA

WA85GWGIP/XSA

SW70SPWIP/XSA

WA85GWWIP/XSA

If people are uncertain whether their machine is one of those in the recall they should contact Samsung to get help. Free inspections of affected machines can be booked by calling Samsung on 1800 239 655 or by visiting www.samsung.com.au/washingmachinerecall.

For more information on the recall or for photographs of the six models visit the NSW Fair Trading website.

Important safety recall information is available at www.recalls.gov.au

NBN update @ Avalon

22 Jul 2015 - Pittwater Council is hosting a free update on the roll out of Australia’s Broadband network at the Avalon Beach RSL Club on Thursday 13 August from 8-10am.

The event supported by Pittwater Business Limited and local chambers of commerce will hear from Michael Tyler from Australia’s Broadband Network (nbn) who will provide the latest update on the roll out of high speed broadband in Sydney, NSW, and more specifically Avalon.

Pittwater Council’s Economic Development Coordinator Paul William-Smith said that the rollout will provide essential infrastructure for Pittwater, supporting economic development and jobs growth.

Mr William-Smith said Pittwater’s growing creative industries sector, for example, needs access to a fast, reliable network to access new customers and markets, resulting in business innovation.

“We have a growing number of home-based businesses that would benefit enormously from fast, reliable broadband, with the advantage of facilities such as video conferencing that remove geographic barriers.

“Meetings with customers, suppliers, colleagues and networks, can take place regardless of location, potentially saving time and costs associated with travel.

“Work, life balance is also enhanced with working from home becoming a real option as we experience fast, reliable internet connection.

“In fact nbn has the potential to change the way we live and learn with certain industries such as education changing significantly, with traditional campuses being of less importance, thanks to satellite lectures.

“Participants at the session will not only hear about the broader benefits of the nbn roll out, but will receive more specific information from the International Copper Association about being nbn-ready from a wiring perspective, added Mr William-Smith.

Applications Open For NSW Footy Facilities Fund

Member for Pittwater Rob Stokes is encouraging local rugby league clubs to consider applying for support under the NSW Government’s Footy Facilities Fund.

The program is a joint initiative between the NSW Government and the National Rugby League and aims to assist clubs improve the quality and availability of their local facilities and boost participation.

Grants up to $75,000 are available and clubs are required to contribute at least 50% of the total project cost.

The Narrabeen Sharks were successful in last year’s program and received $39,600 to assist with improvements to its Lakeside Park clubhouse.

“This is a great opportunity for local club’s to boost their fundraising efforts and kick-start necessary projects,” Rob Stokes said today.

“Grassroots footy grounds are where sporting stars develop - so it’s great the NSW Government is offering support.

“Many local footy clubs have exciting plans and proposals but they need a leg-up to help them become a reality.

“The Narrabeen Sharks received funds in last year’s program and it would be great to see this success continue.

Applications are now open and will be accepted until Wednesday August 12, 2015.

“Further details on the program and information on how to apply is available by visiting www.dsr.nsw.gov.au/grants

“I encourage all our local footy clubs to explore this great opportunity,” Rob Stokes said.

Start with the Pub2Pub... then party all day!

The 2015 Pub2Pub Fun Run & Festival is growing all the time, both in numbers and stature as an iconic community event.

Family Festival on Fire!
We can now let you know that thanks to Major Sponsor URM, we have at least six great bands taking to the stage at Newport, with the headline act no less than former Midnight Oil legend Rob Hirst with his current band, The Backsliders.

'Tarantino-esque' surf rockers The Mezcaltones will kick-start the music at 10am.

We've also confirmed two Co-Hosts for the day - Triple M's Gus Worland (The Grill Team) and TV Presenter Matt White. Gus will actually compete in the 3km event from Mona Vale with his three kids before taking over M.C. duties from Matt (once he's warmed down) at the carnival-style Finish Line party. The licensed bar will help quench the thirst of runners completing the race, international food stalls will stave off any hunger pangs and there'll be plenty of activities for the kids.

Sea Eagles on board
The Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles are now right behind us and at all their home games in the lead-up to Pub2Pub, they're promoting a massive 'Community Day Out'. Several Sea Eagles stars will be present to greet runners at the Finish Line at Newport on Sunday morning August 23 and sign autographs for young fans.

And after you've enjoyed all the fun of the Family Festival at Newport Surf Club, the Sea Eagles are also hoping to organise transport taking you directly to Brookvale Oval for the 4pm kick-off of the suburban blockbuster against arch-rivals, Parramatta.

This will truly be the best Pub2Pub ever!

So... if you haven't yet registered to take part in all the fun that is the 2015 Pub2Pub Fun Run & Festival, do it today. And even if injury or ill health will prevent you from taking part in the race, you can still soak up the wonderful community spirit that will flow non-stop from 9:30am at Newport. See you there!

Congratulations to the residents of Manly, Mosman, Pittwater and Warringah who are some of the best recyclers in NSW. However plastic bags that can’t be recycled from the home are sometimes found in the recycling bins. These bags contaminate the recycling and can jam machinery. Plastic bags full of recycling can end up in landfill wasting resources.

To try and combat the problem and save valuable recyclables, SHOROC and its partner councils have a new campaign asking those residents that don’t recycle right to hang onto the bag and dispose of it responsibly.

If you need to use a plastic bag, then empty the recyclables into the recycling bin and put the bag in your garbage bin. Even better, recycle the plastic bag at your local supermarket. But best of all try to avoid plastic bags totally – after all it is Plastic Free July and you can sign up for a day, a week or the whole month and try to refuse ALL single-use plastic.

The challenge is simple: keep household recycling bins free of plastic bags and make your recycling count – and pass on the message to neighbours, friends or family.

New skate park for Mona Vale

Pittwater Council’s plans to build a new skate park at Kitchener Park, Mona Vale are now underway and we are seeking input on the design process.

We need your help to shape the design and input on questions like whether or not to keep and renovate the existing half pipe.

A skate park working group is being formed to provide advice, recommendations and local knowledge to Council on behalf of skateboard, BMX, scooter users and skate related enthusiasts and professionals.

Pittwater Council’s Mayor, Jacqui Townsend said the project was a cornerstone in delivering one of Council’s key strategic objectives – promoting youth involvement in recreational and social activities.

“The skate park at Kitchener Park has been a longstanding concern and something we are committed to delivering to our community.

“The facility will cater for the interests, needs and safety of current and future generations of skate facility users,” added Cr Townsend.

The preparation of concept design and tendering for the project will take place from mid to late 2015, with construction of the upgrade commencing in early 2016.

Project information and expression of interest survey for the working party are located on our website at: Pittwater.nsw.gov.au/yoursay

To submit your ideas for consideration email:Pittwater_council@pittwater.nsw.gov.au or call David Bremner, Community Engagement Officer on 9970 1262

SAVE THE CLASSIC TIMBER YACHT, "CURRAWONG"

The photo tells the story of a sad, slow death of a classically built, vintage yacht beached at Dangar Island on the Hawkesbury River.

CURRAWONG is so well constructed that she could with much tender loving care and a deep pocket, be restored.

Time is rapidly running out for this beautiful, veteran yacht at a notice of imminent destruction has been glued to her hull.

Ahoy!, calling all wooden boat lovers to rally around a great cause and save the CURRAWONG for future generations to enjoy and appreciate!

New $470,000 rescue boat arrives at new home in Cottage Point

July 12, 2015

A new $470,000 offshore rescue vessel has arrived at the Marine Rescue Cottage Point unit, boosting the emergency capability of Marine Rescue NSW volunteers on Northern Sydney waters.

MR Cottage Point Unit Commander Paul Millar said members have been out in force to inspect the keenly-anticipated Cottage Point 30 and familiarise themselves with their new rescue vessel.

The 11.5m vessel was built by Sailfish Catamarans in Alstonville, inland from Ballina on the NSW North Coast.

After passing its sea trials on the Richmond River at Ballina in mid-June, it was trucked south to Sydney and was launched at Brooklyn where MR Cottage Point crew members took over and steered it home.

“The Sailfish is the largest twin-hulled vessel in the Marine Rescue fleet,” UC Millar said.

“Its eight-tonne aluminium-hulled sturdiness will make it ideally suited for emergency operations up to 35nm offshore.

“It will also able to navigate in the tight, shallow bays and waterways of Broken Bay and to beach in otherwise inaccessible areas of the National Park in medical emergencies

“This spectacular new boat will be a significant improvement to rescue operations on northern Sydney waters, providing a state of the art vessel on call 24-7 to assist the boating community.

“It will become an important part of Marine Rescue’s strategic search and rescue safety net of offshore vessels covering this region,” he said.

Marine Rescue NSW Commissioner Stacey Tannos said Cottage Point 30 was a significant investment in the safety of the many local and visiting boaters on the picturesque northern waterways and also of the Cottage Point volunteers.

“It is the latest vessel delivered in our ongoing rescue fleet modernisation program, which has delivered 61 new and refurbished rescue vessels to our units at a cost of more than $14 million,” he said.

“These modern, purpose-designed and built rescue vessels are ensuring our volunteers have reliable, effective and above all safe boats for their vital work to save lives on the water.”

Cottage Point 30 is powered by twin 300hp Suzuki engines and can reach speeds of around 28 knots (52 km/h).

State of the art electronics installed on MRNSW vessels include, Raymarine FLIR, AIS, Navigation/Sounder Multi Function Displays and Radar. Sailor VHF, GME 27Mhz and TAIT DCN marine radios.

Advanced first aid equipment including cardiac defibrillator and oxygen is also on-board as standard.

Flying-fox Dispersal Program

Dispersal of the local flying-fox population at Cannes Reserve Avalon will start on Monday 13 July.

The program will run from Monday to Saturday for up to three weeks, with follow up over a limited time in the next couple of months if successful.

The dispersal comes after extensive consultation with local residents living near the reserve, and has been licensed by the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage.

The program aims to restore and maintain a sustainable balance between flying-foxes and our local residents.

Council will be working in Cannes Reserve in the mornings from 4am to 6.30am to coordinate dispersal activities. For the safety of residents, the reserve will be closed to the public during the entire works period.

Dispersal activities will include the use of noise and visual deterrents including, spotlights, and possibly smoke.  As the flying-foxes are a protected species, the dispersal aims to cause the flying-foxes to abandon Cannes Reserve by annoyance and not through harm.

Pittwater Mayor Jacqui Townsend has requested patience from residents in saying;

“I do feel for our local residents and the potential for an early wake-up call during this process, but Council is doing everything it can to minimise these impacts, and it is only temporary.

I ask residents to remember that our priority is the safe dispersal of the flying foxes” Mayor Townsend added.

If you see flying-foxes in unusual locations, behaving strangely or appearing sick or injured, please contact Council on the Flying-Fox Helpline 9970 1313 and do not handle them.

Information and regular updates on the progress of the dispersal

Funding program subsidises pet desexing

Pittwater Council is pleased to offer pension and concession card holders free desexing for their cat or dog during July and August.

The desexing trial has been made possible thanks to funding by the Office of Local Government’s ‘Responsible Pet Ownership Grants Program and will be carried out at Pittwater Animal Hospital, Council’s Animal Services provider.

According to Pittwater Animal Hospital’s veterinarian Dr Eamon Grattan-Smith “targeted desexing programs are recognised as a highly effective way of addressing cat and dog over population.

“There are many benefits of desexing your cat or dog apart from preventing unwanted pregnancies.  These include helping to reduce straying, fighting and aggression and antisocial behaviour, such as spraying to mark territory,” added Dr Grattan-Smith.

The subsided desexing will be free to pension or concession card holders in the area, all that is needed is to provide proof of pension or concession cards.

For all other residents the offer is extended at 50% off the regular price. This offer only applies to routine desexing of healthy animals. The vet will determine your pet’s suitability.

Please note, if considering having your pet desexed, guidelines stipulate that cats and dogs must be microchipped before or at time of desexing, and any animals over the age of six months would also require registration at time of desexing.

There is no limit on the number of animals per household.

Places are limited so please register you interest calling 9970 1194 or email eceducation_team@pittwater.nsw.gov.au

Cat enthusiasts will be treated with information and freebies from the ‘Who’s Who’ of the pet world. There will be a variety of stalls including animal welfare organisations, pedigree cat organisations, pet nutrition, pet accessories, veterinary services, cat behaviourists, cat toys and enrichment and cat containment enclosures.

The Centre for Volunteering’s Chief Executive Officer Gemma Rygate said the annual awards were the State’s way of recognising the outstanding work of volunteers in our community.

“Volunteers give generously to their local communities and National Volunteer Week is a great opportunity for every Australian to say thank you,” Ms Rygate said.

“The 2.4 million volunteers in NSW contribute $8 billion to our economy. If volunteering was an industry, it would one of the largest in the state.”

The Centre for Volunteering – the peak body for volunteering in NSW – is encouraging people to nominate local volunteers for formal recognition through the 2015 NSW Volunteer of the Year Awards.

The NSW Volunteer of the Year Awards is an annual program run by The Centre for Volunteering to recognise the outstanding work of volunteers in every region across NSW. Twenty one award ceremonies are held across NSW in September and October where nominees are recognised with certificates and winners announced. Regional winners will be entered into the overall State 2015 Volunteer of the Year Award which is announced in December.

“Don’t think twice about nominating a volunteer you know for an award. They all deserve recognition and every volunteer nominated is recognised at their local ceremony,” Ms Rygate said.

There are 8 award categories:

Student Volunteer of the Year

Youth Volunteer of the Year

Adult Volunteer of the Year

Senior Volunteer of the Year

Volunteer Team of the Year

Excellence in Volunteer Management

Corporate Volunteer of the Year (individual)

Smoke alarm systems for the hearing impaired

Today, Narrabeen’s ‘A’ Platoon had the absolute pleasure of meeting and assisting two older residents of the War Vets at Collaroy who required assistance in installing their new smoke alarm system.

The husband and wife are both hearing impaired which means that they may not hear a regular smoke alarm if it activates. The gentleman told us the story of a fire in their previous apartment block in Narrabeen a few years ago. He said that he and his wife did not know anything about it till the next day as they did not hear the buildings evacuation alarms go off when they were asleep due to their impairment.

Most smoke alarm systems for persons with an impairment operate the same way with some minor differences. This particular system that we helped to install today consists of three interconnected elements.

A wireless battery operated smoke alarm

A vibrating pillow pad and

A strobe light

The smoke alarm looks and acts like a standard smoke alarm. It has a ten year internal Lithium battery and when the smoke alarm is activated it wirelessly communicates with the vibration pad and the strobe light.

The vibrating pillow pad is a small plastic pad that is about the size of a tea cup saucer. It has a long communication wire connected to it that plugs into the strobe unit which is mounted on the wall next to the bed. When the smoke alarm activates, it sends a signal to the vibration pad (which is located under a pillow on the bed) to activate. The vibration is strong enough to wake a person from a deep sleep.

The final piece of equipment is a strobe light unit. This unit is mounted on the wall next to the resident’s bed. The smoke alarm sends an activation signal to both the vibration pad and the strobe light and both will not stop operating until the smoke alarm is silenced or the smoke is removed from the apartment. The strobe unit itself needs to be plugged into a power point. However in the event of a blackout it will run on a battery backup unit until power is restored.

Fire & Rescue have more information on smoke alarm system for the deaf and hearing impaired on their web page athttp://www.fire.nsw.gov.au/page.php?id=629

Cold Weather Precautions

July 11, 2015

Narrabeen Firefighters are asking that you please take the time to ensure that your heating appliances, fireplaces and other approved indoor heating devices have been properly maintained prior to the arrival of the dreaded 'Antarctic vortex' tonight

There have been multiple house fires in NSW so far this weekend that have involved poorly maintained chimneys and heaters that are not designed or approved for indoor use. This has resulted in several people being taken to hospital for treatment

So what is so dangerous about bringing outdoor heaters inside? Those heaters that burn LPG, wood, coal or other solid fuels produce deadly gases that, if not properly vented can build up in a confined space and kill you. One of these gases is carbon monoxide which, in very small amounts can render a person unconcious with only a few breaths and can kill with just a few more.

Heaters that are designed for indoor use or wood and gas fireplaces are typically flued. That is, they vent the toxic gases and smoke out of your home.

So we simply ask that you don't take any unnecessary risks during this cold snap and leave your outdoor heaters outside.

NSW Rubber Duckie Racers Out For Glory

Tuesday 14 July 2015 - SLS NSW
State pride will be on the line at the annual Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB) Interstate Championships, where the NSW team will be hoping to achieve what their rugby league and netball counterparts could not – defeat Queensland on their home turf.

The one-day representative competition kicks-off on Friday at Queensland’s Mooloolaba Beach. In what promises to be a pulsating finish to the IRB racing season, the Australian Titles are also being held at the same venue immediately following the championship.

After finishing third in 2014 behind Victoria and defending champions Queensland, the 2015 team are quietly confident of achieving a successful result.

“Our preparation has been great, morale among the group is stronger than ever and everyone is determined to put everything into trying to achieve what we all want, which is victory,” Coach Nathan Foster said.

“We have selected a team with a good blend of youth and experience and we are determined as team to give this Interstate Championships a red hot go and represent NSW with everything we have.”

The coach who is also competing is hugely experienced at this level with this being his seventh campaign as a competitor and second as a coach. He said it is sometimes difficult to juggle the dual responsibility of a coach and athlete, but it is something enjoys as is the challenge of taking on Queensland on their home turf.

“The Queensland team is a strong unit and have been for many years. They benefit from warmer winter temperatures for training and competition, and also the fact that all their clubs use the same type of boat which makes team based races easier,” Mr Foster said.

“We will enjoy racing in the relative warmth of the Sunshine Coast, and need everyone in the NSW team to race at 100% and if they do, we will be in there with a strong chance.”

The NSW team have been put through their paces at two previous training sessions and will shortly travel to Queensland where they will fine-tune their preparations ahead of Friday’s competition.

Competition at the 2015 Interstate Championship gets underway at Mooloolaba Beach, Queensland on Friday July 17. The Australian titles will follow at the same venue, and will conclude on Sunday 19 July.

NSW parents offered free face-to-face parenting support

Parents of children with a disability in New South Wales are being offered two years of free evidence-based parenting support, under a world-first research project led by the University of Sydney.

Free seminars and one-on-one parenting sessions are available through the Stepping Stones Triple P project which aims to reduce childhood behavioural problems, and improve the wellbeing of parents of children with special needs across the state.

Chair of Mental Health at the University of Sydney, Professor Stewart Einfeld said parents of children with a disability face daily challenges as their children have three to four times the behavioural problems of typically developing kids.

"It's essentially important that we offer families targeted support as children with developmental disabilities, such as autism spectrum disorders, Fragile X and Down syndrome are much more prone to emotional and behavioural problems," Professor Einfeld said.

"Research has also shown that as a result, parents of children with a disability experience higher levels of stress and mental health problems."

"The Stepping Stones program can have a huge impact on families' lives, with seventy one percent of children with a disability showing substantial improvements in their behaviour after their parents complete the program."

Funded by the National Health and Medical Research Council, the program is also offered in Victoria and Queensland under a research partnership with Monash University and the University of Queensland.

Information for parents:

Parents of children with a disability can visit www.triplep-steppingstones.net to register their interest in receiving free support under the Stepping Stones Triple P Project. The program will be progressively rolled out across the state over the next few months. Parents in northern New South Wales will be the first to benefit.

 UNIQUE VEHICLE SHOW 2015

The Royal Motor Yacht Club Broken Bay at Newport is pleased to announce the staging of the 8th Annual “UNIQUE VEHICLE SHOW" on Sunday 26th July.

An "unusual" event for a Yacht Club to host you might think, but "boaties" do have many other interests, and an enthusiasm for all things mechanical is certainly one of them!

Rob Brown (RMYC Event Organiser) said today in announcing the event,

“We are very excited to host the show once again this year. We are working closely with the Pittwater Motor Enthusiasts Association and their members, who will be show casing some of the rarest motor vehicles, bikes and engines dating as far back as the early 1900’s.  And while you are here you can try out our “food and wine tasting” that will run throughout the day.

This year the show will incorporate a new category, a selected number of moderns… from the year 2000 through to the present day. This will obviously add even more colour and flare to what has been a fantastic array of motoring history over the last seven years here at RMYC.

There will be over 60 vehicles on display including beautifully restored Vintage cars, Classics, Sports Cars, Hot Rods, Motorcycles, working engines and Models.

The vehicles will be located in the waterfront car park at the Royal Motor Yacht Club, 46 Prince Alfred Parade, Newport.  10am till 3.00pm.

Entry is free - members of the Public are welcome but will need to sign in, if they wish to use the club’s facilities. Parking is limited at the club, so why not make it an even more special day by catching the historic MV Reliance ferry from Rowland Reserve Bayview or from the Newport Arms Public Wharf. Cost $5.00 per person each way!

We look forward to seeing you here at the RMYC!

For more information, please contact RMYC office during business hours – 9997 5511.

Scotland Island Road Restoration

9 July 2015

Member for Pittwater Rob Stokes today announced the NSW Government will provide $286,000 to assist with the restoration of Scotland Island’s local road network following the destructive April storms.

The funding has been allocated to Pittwater Council as part of the NSW Government’s Natural Disaster Assistance Scheme and will be used to address erosion and damage on Richard Road, Cecil Street, Thompson Street and Hilda Avenue.

“Scotland Island was one of the hardest hit areas of our community and the clean-up is still continuing,” Rob Stokes said today.

“The Island’s local road network was left in a terrible state and extensive improvements are desperately needed.

“Pittwater was among only a handful of areas across NSW to be declared natural disaster zones and this has triggered a range of State Government assistance packages.

“Pittwater Council will now be able to progress necessary improvements and restore the Island’s road network to an acceptable standard.

“I’m delighted the NSW Government has been able to provide financial support for this project,” Rob Stokes said.

Applications Open For NSW Footy Facilities Fund

9 July 2015

Netball NSW to introduce Netball NSW Premier League

July 8, 2015

Netball NSW this evening announced the introduction of the Netball NSW Premier League (NNSWPL) at a formal function held at the governing body’s $35 million centre of excellence, Netball Central, Sydney Olympic Park.

The NNSWPL, which will commence in 2016, is a new competition to attract the best current and emerging talent within NSW.  Its purpose is to offer a local, elite platform for players, coaches, officials and administrators, and provide bridging opportunities in to the Australian Netball League (ANL) and subsequent ANZ Championship.

Three years ago, Netball NSW proactively commenced an extensive review of its High Performance Programs, with the inclusion of such an elite competition in its pathway seen as a priority in the organisation’s vision of producing State and Australian representatives.

“With participation and interest in netball at an all-time high, the introduction of the Netball NSW Premier League is an exciting development for the sport within New South Wales,” said Netball NSW CEO and NNSWPL Commissioner, Carolyn Campbell.

“While we have, and will continue to run successful competitions, we see the Netball NSW Premier League playing a vital role in retaining our State’s emerging and elite talent pool while providing the high level competition which aspiring athletes, coaches and officials require for higher accolades.”

Through a robust application process, overseen by the NNSWPL Commission, the eight successful Franchises granted an initial two-year NNSWPL Licence are;

Blacktown City (Netball Association Incorporated)

Central Coast Heart (Incorporated)

Eastwood Ryde (Netball Association Incorporated)

Manly Warringah Sapphires (Premier League Netball Incorporated)

North Shore United (Limited)

Panthers (Premier League Netball Incorporated)

Sutherland Stingrays (Premier League Netball Incorporated)

UTS St George Sparks (Netball Association Incorporated)

The NNSWPL will be contested across two Divisions – Opens and Under 20s – with a Pre-Season tournament scheduled from 2 March through 23 March 2016, followed by the commencement of the 14-week regular season beginning 18 April 2016.  The Finals Series will be contested over three weeks, with the Grand Final currently penned for week commencing 22 August 2016.

“I’m proud to say that more people play netball in NSW than any other State or Territory in Australia,” said Netball NSW President Wendy Archer AM.

“Netball NSW is continually looking for ways to engage more people in our great sport, and to foster and support the ambitions of our members.

“The Netball NSW Premier League is a wonderful addition to our competitions calendar, and along with the eight Franchises, we look forward to delivering a competition which will be revered as the Premier State League in the country,” concluded Archer.

With an official NNSWPL Launch scheduled for February 2016, Netball NSW and the eight Franchises are now engaging with the corporate sector to secure support ahead of the inaugural season.

All games in the NNSWPL will be played at Netball Central, the world’s leading purpose built netball facility at Sydney Olympic Park.

“This program has supported a huge number of projects throughout our community,” Rob Stokes said

“Pittwater is really fortunate to have a diversity of community groups and associations that could all benefit from an injection of funds.

“Projects seeking moderate contributions and supported by leveraged funds have been particularly successful in recent years.

“There are many local sporting and community groups that may not have other avenues to attract funds and I would especially encourage these groups to consider applying.

“Applications are now open and will be accepted until Friday 7 August 2015.

“Further details, and information on how to apply, is available by visiting the program’s websitewww.communitybuildingpartnership.nsw.gov.au

“I encourage all eligible community groups to explore this opportunity and submit their applications,” Rob Stokes said.

Andy Cross Becomes President of South Narrabeen Surf Club

July 6, 2015 - Surf Life Saving Sydney Northern Beaches

For someone as passionate as Andy Cross (pictured) is to surf life saving, he was bound to become a president one day.

Well, it has become rather sooner than later for Andy, who takes over the reins at South Narrabeen Surf Club from the affable Rohan Fisher.

Rohan gave five great years of service as president to the club.

Andy, who has been the club's Chief Training Officer since 2008, said: "It's exciting and I am really looking forward to the challenge.

"I know I have a lot to learn and that I have a tough act to follow in Rohan. He did such a fantastic job for the club in education and surf sports.

"I would like to expose the club a bit more in both education and surf sports and boost our patrols with younger members.

''There are new people on the committee and they are so enthusiastic.

"I took over the role of CTO from Matt Fordham and he's coming back which is great for the club.

"I am sure the club will continue to blossom with our family values.''

Critter of the Month - July 2015

                      Torn-up Tawny
Dear little Eglantine arrived at the surgery after having been rescued from a barbed-wire fence. She had flown too low to catch a moth and become caught in the rusty barbs.

Struggling to free herself, she had managed to tear the skin on her left wing and scraped her chest flesh.

She’d been in care for at least a week by the time she came to us. Her carer had noticed that she couldn’t use her wing, despite the fact that she only had superficial wounds, and no fractures.

Dr Ralph examined the damage and started to remove feathers that had become enmeshed in the healing tissue.

It soon became apparent that there was more damage than just superficial scratches, however. So we had to anaesthetise Eglantine and explore further.

Dr Ralph had also noticed some stridor (noisy breathing) and took a swab from her trachea. The swab showed candida in her lungs. She was put on ketaconazole to treat the fungal infection.
Under anaesthetic, Dr Ralph removed the dead tissue and matted feathers and cleansed the area thoroughly. In trying to heal, the tissue had started to enmesh incorrectly, causing fixed flexion deformity in the wing - meaning that she could not fully extend her wing for flight. Dr Ralph had to undo the incorrect healing and then suture the open wound.

She was given an injection of long-acting antibiotics and some oral antibiotics to send home with her carer.

Eglantine had to have her wound dressed and strapped to prevent further damage. After the bandages were removed, she was in need of some flight practise. She was transferred to Waratah Park - Sydney Wildlife’s rehabilitation facility for wildlife in their last phase of recovery. She is currently flapping around in a large aviary and will be released after her final veterinary check-up on Wednesday.
Tawny frogmouths often get hit by cars when they see a moth flying in the headlights of vehicles. They swoop to catch the moth and get smashed. Then they come to us with significant concussion.

They are also quite prone to getting rat lungworm disease. Affected rats defecate and then snails and slugs that slide over the faeces become infected. Tawny frogmouths then eat the snails/slugs and become sick with the parasite.

Toxoplasmosis is another disease they often contract.

The tawny frogmouth is often called an owl, but they are actually part of the nightjar family.

Query to the Community – Metters Products and Scottish Bricks – Please Help

Hello from Scotland. I wonder if you or any of your followers can assist me with a small query.

Back in 2013 you posted this article:www.pittwateronlinenews.com/metters-australia--stoves…

I have a fascination for the Scottish brick industry and associated products (sadly no longer an industry for us!)....I have just posted this on my site and I wondered if you or any of your readers had any evidence to confirm or deny the idea that some Metters products were, at some point manufactured in Scotland.

Also: If any of your readers find a Scottish brick I would love to hear from them.  My email is markcranston1962@gmail.com

See Metters/Scotland on my website HERE

Thanking you all in advance,

Club Marine Pittwater to Coffs Harbour Yacht Race 2016 - Entries Open

The Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club and Coffs Harbour Yacht Club welcome all eligible boats to enter the 35th Club Marine Pittwater to Coffs Yacht Yacht Race. The 226nm Category 2 Bluewater race from Pittwater to Coffs Harbour will start on Saturday January 2, 2016, 1300hrs.

Once in Coffs Harbour a single non-pointscore fun pursuit race from Coffs Harbour around the Solitary Islands off the Coffs Coast will be held on January 5.

The Notice of Race has been published and applications for entry are open at the Event Website: www.pittwatertocoffs.com.au .

There will be five entry categories available; IRC, PHS, ORCi, Multihull (OMR), and a Shorthanded (PHS) division.

The 2016 Club Marine Pittwater to Coffs Harbour Yacht Race again welcomes entries from eligible multihulls. Back in January 2014 Sean Langman’s Orma 60 trimaran Team Australia took line honours in the multihull division and created a new race record of 17hrs 7mins 5secs.

Corey Yeung, NSW State Manager of naming rights sponsor Club Marine, added, “Club Marine is proud to be associated with the longstanding event and the competing yachtsmen and women. We once again look forward to meeting competitors, seeing them out on the water at the start off Palm Beach and welcoming them at the Coffs Harbour Yacht Club in early January.”

To assist owners and crew in their preparation for the race The Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club has developed the "Come to Coffs Pathway", a series of training opportunities (including Safety at Sea, First Aid, Person Overboard, Radio Operator courses) Seminars (Navigating to Coffs, Internet@Sea, Essential Equipment), and qualify races to meet the eligibility requirements of a Category 2 race.

Two safety items the Coffs Race Committee have adopted for the race is the inclusion for all boats to carry an AIS Transponder and a satellite phone. In previous races Satellite phone were an option if a boat was using an HF radio. The Race Committee believes these technologies will benefit the safety of all competitors sailing north through some of the coasts busiest shipping lanes. Virtual skeds will continue to be used for the 2016 race as boats will have Yellow Brick trackers installed throughout the race and also for the Coffs Harbour Solitary Islands Race.

Applications for entry close December 1, 2015.

Pittwater Mayor Jacqui Townsend has requested patience from residents in saying;

Funding program subsidises pet desexing

07 Jul 2015

2015 VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR AWARDS OPEN

NSW residents are urged to nominate volunteers for recognition in the 2015 NSW Volunteer of the Year

Awards, with The Centre for Volunteering opening nominations today to mark National Volunteer Week.

To nominate click this link.

 Bushfires in July?

July 7, 2015 – C/- Narrabeen Fire Station

Even though it is only 12 degrees on the Northern Beaches right now, Firefighters from Narrabeen and Dee Why along with the Rural Fire Service have been kept busy with two fires in bushland alongside Narrabeen Lakes this afternoon.

Shortly before 1PM, several Triple Zero (000) phone calls were received indicating that trees were alight in bush land behind Jameson Park. Narrabeen’s pumper arrived in only a few minutes after receiving the call to find several locals attempting to extinguish the fires with buckets of water. Due to the remote location of the fires from any sources of water, crews were forces to carry in buckets of water and used 30 liter knapsacks and hand tools to contain the fires .

The Rural Fire Service from Pittwater were requested and provided a fire fighting vehicle that was able to drive off road and able to fit down the narrow walking trail.

Police from Dee Why are investigating the cause of the two fires and anyone who saw the fires or who may have witnessed a person or persons acting suspiciously in the area are urged to contact Dee Why Police or Crime Stoppers.

A big thanks goes out to 'Matt' the local contractor who used his work vehicle (complete with a 'Gurne' and water tank) to help us extinguish the fire as our fire appliance doesn't go off road.

 VOLUNTARY HEATER RECALL

Faulty electric heaters sold in Woolworths Supermarkets and BIG W stores across Australia from 15/3/15 to 17/6/2015 are being recalled, due to risk of electric shock and fire.

Brisbane to Keppel yacht race - ideal launch pad for the northern circuit

Event: Club Marine Brisbane to Keppel Tropical Yacht Race starts 1100hrs Thursday July 30, 2015 from Moreton Bay finishes Keppel Bay, hosted by the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron at Manly, Brisbane, Queensland

Winter has barely arrived in the south eastern states and already a savvy bunch of yachties are planning to cast off the woolies and get out of town. Entry for the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron’s 9th annual Club Marine Brisbane to Keppel Tropical Yacht Race is open and a diverse fleet is building for the 1100hrs start on Thursday July 30, 2015 from Brisbane’s Moreton Bay.

Of the RQYS organised 343 miler, Rear Commodore Mark Gallagher says, “already there’s a great fleet heading north to enjoy the fantastic hospitality shown by the finish crew at Keppel Bay Marina. The course is scenic and like most coastal passages it’s a thinking person’s race to play the wind and tide to maximum advantage. And we throw whale watching in for free!”

“With regular flights to Rockhampton airport it’s the perfect pit stop for swapping crew and gear, and the ideal launch pad for the northern circuit,” reminds RQ’s sailing manager Richard Matterson.

His team is making it even easier for Sydney Gold Coast yacht race crews wanting to take the option of back-to-back coastal races as the best way to leap-frog north to the Whitsunday regatta loop of Airlie Beach, Hamilton Island and Magnetic Island race weeks.

There’s an existing agreement in place with the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia that paperwork submitted for their Category 2 Sydney Gold Coast yacht race also satisfies the entry criteria for the Brisbane to Keppel. RQYS’ latest initiative to assist owners with logistics is the offer to send their gear truck to Southport Yacht Club to meet the CYCA’s fleet and collect equipment owners need transported north to Manly for the next stage Club Marine Brisbane to Keppel Tropical Yacht Race.

For the past four years supermaxis Wild Oats XI and Grant Wharington’s Wild Thing have been the gun line honours boats. With the Oatleys’ race record holder Wild Oats XI on a ship to Los Angeles to tackle the Transpac Race there’s going to be some elbow room at the head of the table.

So far Peter Harburg’s 70-footer Black Jack is Wild Oats’ likely successor.

Sam Haynes from Sydney has a new Celestial, a JV designed TP52, and though he’s won division one for the past two years he’s coming back to try for a hat trick, and hoping this year is the running race advertised in the brochures. “We are due for a downhill ride, but regardless I need to take the TP north and it’s a good step in that direction, towards Hamilton Island and the IRC Australian Championship. It’s pretty scenic along the Island and getting into the bay at the end; the race itself is good to do.”

The people’s boat, Russel McCart’s Volvo 60 Spirit of Mateship, is returning with its mix of regular and ADF crew.

Now in its ninth year, the 343 nautical mile challenge from Moreton Bay to the finish in Keppel Bay starts at 1100hrs on Thursday July 30, 2015. Further course details will be included in the sailing instructions.

The Notice of Race has been published and online entry is now open.

Entries close Friday July 17, 2015.

Sport NSW Announces the Opening of the 2015 Community Sports Volunteer Awards

More than four hundred thousand people across NSW voluntarily dedicate their time every year through their involvement in sporting clubs and organisations. Put simply, sport would not exist without them. Launching the opening of the awards program today, Sport NSW CEO, Cheryl Battaerd said the Community Sports Volunteer Awards recognise the efforts of those around the state who contribute hours of their personal time to ensure that their fellow community members can participate in sport.

“We recognize the critical and diverse role volunteers play from club administrators and coaches to officials and canteen staff, regardless of the pouring rain, icy temperatures or scorching heat – they are the ones that give life to community sport,” Battaerd said.

“Unfortunately the reality is volunteer participation in sport is falling in NSW and is outpacing the national decline. All evidence points towards changes to patterns, behaviours and expectations of volunteers, and this has to be a focus for sporting organisations. There is an urgent need to help build the capacity and capability of managers and administrators in sport to effectively recruit and retain volunteers. By recognising the value of volunteering, showcasing successful models of volunteer management and providing information and resources, we are hopeful that we will assist the sporting sector in reversing the trend of volunteer decline in NSW,” she said.

Get inspired and read the case study of good volunteer management by the 2014 winners of the Community Sporting Club category - Alstonville & District Football Club.

The Community Sport Volunteer Awards program consists of Individual Awards categories and the Minister’s Sport Volunteer Management Awards recognising sporting organisations.

The Individual Volunteer Community Sport Awards involve five categories:

Official of the Year,   Young Official of the Year,   Coach of the Year,   Young Coach of the Year, and   Community Sport Administrator of the Year.

The Minister’s Sport Volunteer Management Awards aims to attract nominations from organisations that have shown innovative ideas and management techniques in the recognition, education and training, coordination, and recruitment of volunteers. These awards include three categories:   Club/District or Regional Community Sport Organisation;   State Sporting Organisations and   Event of the Year.

NSW Minister for Sport and Recreation, the Hon. Stuart Ayres, MP will be presenting the 2015 NSW Community Sports Volunteer Awards at a function on Friday 21st August 2015 at NSW Parliament House.

Nominations are now open and close on Friday 10th July.

The Awards Guidelines and Nomination Forms can be found at:www.sportnsw.com.au/2015communitysportsvolunteerawards

As the peak body for sport and active recreation, Sport NSW represents the collective interests of NSW’s single largest community sector. With over 100 member groups representing 15,000 sporting clubs and associations and well over 2.5 million participants, workers and volunteers, the community sport and active recreation sector makes a significant contribution to the social, physical, health, mental and economic well-being of our NSW communities.

Flying-Fox Camp

Dispersal of the local flying-fox population at Cannes Reserve, Avalon will start on Monday 13 July for six days per week for up to three weeks. The dispersal comes after extensive consultation with local residents living near the reserve and aims to manage the balance between flying-foxes and residents.

Council will be working in the reserve in the early morning hours 4am to 6.30am to coordinate dispersal activities. For the safety of residents and staff, the reserve will be closed to the public during the entire works period.

Dispersal activities will include the use of noise and visual deterrents including smoke, spotlights and lasers. As the flying-foxes are a protected species, the dispersal aims to cause the flying-foxes to abandon Cannes Reserve by annoyance not through harm. If you see flying-foxes in unusual locations, behaving strangely or appearing sick or injured, please contact Council on the Flying-Fox Helpline 9970 1313 and do not handle them.

More information and regular updates on the progress of the dispersal is available at www.pittwater.nsw.gov.au/cannesreserve

Pet care for seniors

Pittwater residents during the months of July and August can access free or subsidised desexing of their cat or dog at Pittwater Animal Hospital, Council’s animal service provider. The service is free to pension, concession and health care cards holders, and offered at half price to all other residents.

There are many benefits of desexing your cat or dog beyond preventing unwanted pregnancies; desexing helps reduce straying, fighting and aggression and can improve antisocial behaviour, such as spraying to mark territory.

Places are limited.

Cats and Wildlife Expo

Free Event: 26th Jul 2015, 10am - 2pm

Come along to the free Cats and Wildlife Expo at Animal Welfare League Ingleside on Sunday July 26, 10am - 2pm.

The event aims to bring together and educate both cat lovers and wildlife lovers and demonstrate how these different groups can work harmoniously together.

The expo also aims to promote responsible cat ownership and to address the issue of roaming cats in the community.

The community will be able to interact with some unique native Australian wildlife, receive critical information about the need to protect these animals and what impact cats have on wildlife populations.

The Animal Welfare League will be giving guided tours of their ‘luxury’ cat shelter and the chance for people to meet and adopt their next beloved family cat or kitten.

There will be plenty of giveaways including lucky door prizes, cat photo competitions, survey competitions and other freebies like cat food placemats. There will also be free face painting and entertainment for the kids.

The event is brought to you by Ku-ring-gai Council, Pittwater Council and Warringah Council along with Animal Welfare League NSW and National Parks and Wildlife Services.

The Councils were successful in acquiring funding through the Office of Local Government’s ‘Responsible Pet Ownership Grants Program’. The grants program focuses on innovation, collaboration and provides opportunities to promote better practice in responsible pet ownership.

 Memorial Service for Brian Donohoe

- Scotland Island Rural Fire Brigade

The Scotland Island Rural Fire Brigade hosted a memorial service for Brian Donohoe on Sunday 28th June.

Brian lost his battle with Leukaemia on 11 June and will be greatly missed by his partner Jill and his family.

Brian joined the Scotland Island Fire Brigade in 2002 and was a very active member. He then also joined the Community First Responder team who are called out to medical emergencies on the island, when the unit first started in 2011.

At the request of Brian's family his ashes were scattered on Pittwater following a short ceremony at Tennis Wharf where Assistant Commissioner Steve Yorke spoke in appreciation of Brian’s service to the Scotland Island community through his work with the Rural Fire Service and Ambulance NSW.

This was followed by a farewell get together at the fire station where Brian’s partner Jill was presented with Brian’s 10 year service medal from the RFS by Assistant Commissioner Steve Yorke and his service appreciation certificate from Ambulance NSW by Inspector Grahame Rathbone. Member and guests then shared memories of Brian with Jill and family over refreshments.

Brian will be sadly missed by all of us.

Applications Open For Community Building Partnership Program

29 June 2015

Member for Pittwater Rob Stokes is encouraging local community and sporting groups to apply for funds under the NSW Government’s 2015 Community Building Partnership Program.

The NSW Government has allocated $200,000 to the Pittwater community as part of this highly successful program which provides financial assistance to projects that will deliver lasting and wide-reaching benefits to the community.

Local projects that have benefited from this program over recent years include the construction of Mona Vale Hospital’s new Palliative Care Unit, renovations to Mona Vale Hospital’s Rehabilitation and Assessment Unit, Avalon Beach Surf Club’s major renovations, Narrabeen Sport High School’s new synthetic sports field and Pittwater High School’s new security fencing.

“This program has supported a huge number of projects throughout our community,” Rob Stokes said today.

Avalon Craft Cottage Returns to Avalon

Thursday 9th, Friday 10th and Saturday 11th July.

All our regular customers, and particularly those who have been supporting the group since the days of The Cottage, in Old Barrenjoey Rd, will remember ‘our lady’ who stood at the gate welcoming everyone to our shop.

Since then ‘the lady’ has travelled to Wollombi,  been in storage for a while, and for the past few years has stood outside our shows at the Avalon Recreation Centre.
But…. she was starting to look quite aged and  rather in need of a face-lift. Artist Christine Hill to the rescue; a quick trip to Chris’s new studio in Thirroul and we have a wonderfully renewed and remodelled lady… our own thoroughly modern Millie, clad in the very latest 60’s style, and good for another 20 yrs!

It’s only a few days now until our annual BACK TO AVALON show, at the Avalon Recreation Centre; THREE DAYS ONLY Thursday 9th, Friday 10th and Saturday 11th July. We will be open every day from 10am to 4pm…. and as a special treat this year we will be having craft demonstrations during the show. So if you have always wanted to know how to embroider grub roses;  or do needle felting; maybe you’d like to learn basic crochet; or perhaps you have a knitting problem you would like help with?; our members are only too willing to show you how, and to help with any problems you may have.

Plus demonstrations of card making, and as a special treat Ann Guy will be demonstrating her beautiful dog portraits,  2.30pm to 3.30pm on Saturday.
Check our Facebook page for other details of demonstrations.

With a good sized room to spread out in, and all that wonderful wall space to display wall hangings, quilts,  buntings etc it means that all the members can put up a really good display of their brilliant handcrafts.

Wonderful patchwork quilts; brilliantly coloured silk scarves, wall hangings and purses; beautiful pottery; hand knitted scarves or every colour imaginable; warm woollen socks, gloves, hats and bed socks (perfect for these chillly nights); jewellery ; pottery; woodwork;   and ‘good for a giggle’  screen printed tea towels (great for gift giving);  And if you are looking for baby wear, look no further. We have beautifully embroidered baby singlets, onesies, bunny rugs (wraps), bibs & bootees plus pretty crocheted pram covers and beautiful knitted shawls; a wonderful gift for that special new baby. So…. something for everyone!

AS always,  we hope to raise a good amount of money for  Mona Vale Hospital, so be sure to buy lots of tickets in this years raffle; a wonderful basket of handcrafted gifts, all donated by the A.C.C. members. Tickets are just three for $2.

Do come along, support a good cause, and enjoy all the beautiful handcrafts on display…… Look out for ‘the lady’ at the door.

Maureen Darcy-Smith. Publicity Officer

Harriet Birks Art Exhibition; Avalon Recreation Centre

Enliven Pittwater/ Eramboo artist-in-residence Harriet Napier Birks is set to exhibit her new work at Avalon Recreation Centre in July.

The exhibition known as Asleep in the Colour Factory will be a combination of 2D watercolours and video installations and will run daily from 1-5 July from 10.30am to 4pm; with opening night on 30 June from 6pm.

Pittwater Mayor Jaqueline Townsend said she was delighted that after completing her residency at Eramboo, Harriet was now ready to share her work with the local community.

“This residency is about supporting an artist at the same time as we enhance cultural vitality in Pittwater’s town and village centres.

“We are particularly excited by the public programs that accompany Harriet’s exhibition.  Visitors will be invited to colour-in ‘jellybloomz’ illustrations, with the resulting artworks included in a community exhibition” said Cr Townsend.

Eramboo’s artistic director Susan Milne said the residency program was a career accelerator for the talented local artist.

“During the three month residency Harriet was able to totally engulf herself in the creative process as well as tap into the professional support and networks provided.

“She has a dynamic arts practise, which combines film, animation and highly detailed drawing. It will be exciting seeing her work in an exhibition setting,” said Ms Milne.

The exhibition program is as follows:

30 June – Opening night (6pm)

2 July – Artist talk about time lapse animation Q&A (11am)

4 July – Meet the artist (2-4pm)

5 July - #Jellybloomz community project: construct a big jellybloom, all ages (11am)

 LIBRARY CAPTURES THE INTERNET

2 July 2015

Future generations of Australians will now have access to today’s online stories, thanks to the National Library of Australia.

New legislation means that from January 2016 the National Library will be able to capture everything from ebooks to blogs, websites to social media—and everything else published on the Internet.

Director-General of the National Library of Australia, Ms Anne-Marie Schwirtlich, said for more than 100 years, the Library had been collecting all print material about Australia and Australians through legal deposit.

‘This new legislation allows us to take the lead in the way Australia documents the ever-changing online world by collecting the very latest digital media, that is, the full digital landscape.’

Ms Schwirtlich said this had been made possible through the introduction of The Civil Law and Justice Legislation Amendment Bill 2014, which updates the Copyright Act 1968.

This will allow the Library to collect billions of Australian web pages, tens of thousands of Australian ebooks, journals and magazines and any new forms of publication that appear in the future.

‘We look forward to working with the publishing industry so, together, we can preserve all Australian stories, regardless of whether they’re in print or online,’ she said.

‘These new digital collections will be as important for researchers tomorrow as our most prized treasures like Cook’s Endeavour Journal or Edward Koiki Mabo’s papers are today.’

‘Collecting this digital material will let us create a picture of what it’s like living in Australia today: how we think, how we feel, what we care about. This will provide invaluable social history to scholars of the future.’

Surf Life Saving Welcomes Rock Fishing Coronial Recommendations

Thursday July 2 2015

Surf Life Saving NSW has welcomed the Coroner’s recommendations, which include mandating the wearing of lifejackets for rock fishers, and looks forward to assisting Police and Emergency Services with the implementation of any safety initiatives.

Surf Life Saving NSW’s Lifesaving Manger, Andy Kent, thanked the Coroner for her thorough inquest into the deaths of nine rock fishermen who were swept or fell into the water and drowned in the last few years. Fifty-three people have died while rock fishing in NSW since 2010. Rock fishing is currently the leading cause of coastal drowning in NSW.

This inquest comes four years after Deputy State Coroner Buscombe recommended compulsory lifejackets for rock fishers should be considered and three years after a Surf Life Saving report commissioned by the Dept of Primary Industries recommended mandatory lifejackets while rock fishing be legislated.

“Surf Life Saving NSW fully supports the recommendations delivered today by the Coroner,” said Andy Kent. “We welcome the opportunity to assist Police and Emergency Services, Department of Primary Industries and recreational fishing groups to work through these recommendations and how they can be implemented.”

Surf Life Saving has been tackling rock fishing safety by focussing on public education, encouraging use of lifejackets and issuing dangerous surf warnings through the media when hazardous conditions are forecast. Despite these efforts, surf lifesavers have become increasingly frustrated as the drowning toll continues to rise.

Mandating the use of lifejackets for rock fishers is a sensible next step, according to the peak coastal safety organisation. Coastal safety assessments of rock fishing blackspots contained in Surf Life Saving’s Project Blueprint reports were tabled at the inquest.

“Our volunteer lifesavers see first-hand the untold impact these tragedies have on the families of those killed and we fully support any measures which will make the sport safer,” said Andy Kent.

“As the inquest was unable to find any evidence that wearing a lifejacket would make rock fishers less safe, we would support a move to make them mandatory as a way of reducing drownings,” he said.

“This would also decrease the risk faced by our volunteers who are called on to rescue rock fishers who have been swept into the ocean.”

Surf Life Saving NSW will offer its expertise in coastal safety and risk assessment to assist in the implementation of any of the Coronial recommendations.

NDIS early roll out kicks off

1 July 2015: Joint Media Release with: The Hon. John Ajaka MLC, NSW Minister for Disability Services

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) achieved a significant milestone today, as the early rollout of the Scheme in NSW commences.

From today, children and young people with disability in the Nepean, Blue Mountains and Hawkesbury area, and their families, will take the first steps to accessing the Scheme.

Young people and their families will be able to work with Local Area Coordinators to get ready for the NDIS when it begins in September and can then start working with planners to create individualised funding packages.

Assistant Minister for Social Services, Senator the Hon Mitch Fifield, said NSW and the Nepean, Blue Mountains and Hawkesbury area is well prepared for the NDIS.

“Our agreement with the Baird Government for the early roll out of the NDIS in western Sydney was great news for around 2,000 children and young people with disability and their families,” Minister Fifield said.

“This is the first step for the NDIS beyond the trial sites, and preparations are well and truly underway.

“The Australian Government is investing $20 million into the rollout of the NDIS to western Sydney this financial year to make this possible.”

Mr Ajaka said the NDIS was full steam ahead in NSW.

“We are incredibly proud to be delivering the NDIS ahead of schedule and particularly pleased to be doing so in greater Western Sydney,” Mr Ajaka said.

“It has meant there are 2,000 children and young people who will get the support they need to help achieve their goals and aspirations, one year earlier than originally planned.

“We have kicked off today, and there are many players getting behind the NDIS here.

“It is estimated 140,000 people with disability in NSW will directly benefit from the NDIS at full scheme.”

For more information on the NDIS, go to www.ndis.gov.au

New Law Enhancing Online Safety for Children Commences 1 July

30 June 2015

New legislation to enhance online safety for children takes effect from 1 July 2015, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Communications, Paul Fletcher said today.

The new laws establish the Office of the Children's eSafety Commissioner.

The Children's eSafety Commissioner will operate a complaints system backed by legislation to get harmful cyberbullying material targeted at an Australian child down quickly from large social media sites.

Leading online safety expert Alastair MacGibbon has been appointed to the role of Children's eSafety Commissioner.

Under the new laws, the Children's eSafety Commissioner has the power to issue a notice to a large social media service requiring it to remove cyberbullying material targeted at an Australian child.

The Commissioner will also have the power to issue a notice to a person who has posted cyberbullying material targeted at an Australian child, requiring the person to remove the material.

"Over the past few years there have been big changes in children's online behaviour." Mr Fletcher said.

"Today children use social media very extensively – often from the age of ten or younger.  And many children have smartphones or other devices which give internet connectivity – meaning they are often using the internet in circumstances where there is no adult supervision.

"The Coalition took a policy to enhance online safety for children to the 2013 election – and we are delivering on our policy commitment.

"Research has found that over a 12 month period, one in five children aged eight to seventeen are exposed to cyberbullying. The overwhelming message from the Australian public is that we must do more to protect Australian kids online – and that is what the Children's eSafety Commissioner has been established to do."

The complaints service is available to Australian children on a "soft launch" basis from 1 July 2015.  There will be a formal launch of the service in weeks to come.

From 1 July, the Children's eSafety Commissioner website and cyberbullying complaint form will be live at www.esafety.gov.au, for those wanting more information, or those wanting to make a complaint.
